Recommend a drawing tablet...not TOO pricey

I hope this is the right forum for this question. My wife is an artist of the pencil/pen/paint variety. She's interested in trying her hand at digital art and I'd like to get her a drawing tablet. On the one hand, I don't want to spend a fortune on it as she may decide it's not for her and never use it much. On the other hand, I don't want to buy something so cheesy that it turns her off to the whole idea.

Recommendations, anyone?

Oh, and as long as I'm asking: We need a new scanner, too. Again, her artwork (pen/pencil/watercolor, etc.) is the main reason, so if you have any recommendations in that vein I'd love to hear them.

The Wacom Graphire is a plain old tablet. Prices range from $90 to $200, depending on size and connection type. http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=wacom+graphire&hl=en&btnG=Search+Froogle

Wacom also sells "artists tablets" which are bigger tablets with buttons and "advanced features" (which I think you can duplicate without the tablet). They also have expensive touch-screen LCDs.

Your other option is a tablet PC, but they're as expensive as laptops.

Yeah, I don't think I want to go for a tablet PC. We're actually going to buy a new system for her, but I think she'd prefer a regular desktop with a nice big screen.
