Giant ants form cooperative colonies and are normally docile but can be fierce fighters if their nest is threatened. Ants contribute immensely to population control of their prey, recycling of plant material, seed dispersal, turning of the soil, and other major ecological processes.
Combat: Both worker and soldier ants will fight. If a soldier ant manages to bite, it will also attempt to sting for 1d4+1 points of piercing damage. The Queen ant does not move or attack being incapable of both. If she is killed, the remaining ants become confused (as if affected by the spell) for six rounds, then scramble from the nest.
Society A giant ant colony makes it nest underground in a series of rooms and passages. Mounds of dirt and twigs mark the entrances. The passages may reach a depth of 16 feet, and the entire nest may be spread out over an area exceeding several thousand square yards.
When encountered in the wilderness, there is a 90% chance that all of the ants are workers. Encountered in their colony; there is usually one warrior ant for every five workers; a typical colony consists of 100-200 workers, 20-40 warriors, and a single queen. The warriors are responsible for guarding the queen and defending the nest. All other duties are divided among the workers. Some gather food, some clean the nest; some attend to the developing larvae. Others suck nectar from flowers and produce honey-like syrup as another food source.
Development: The four life stages of an ant are egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The foot long white eggs laid by the queen hatch in two weeks into white larvae. After feeding two months, larvae grow into 2’ long pupae, called ant eggs. Over the next two months they grow to 3’ in length and they emerge as fully grown ants. Queens and workers of some species are known to live longer than 15 years.
Ecology: Giant ants tend to be omnivorous with insects and grains being the main part of their staple diet. However they are not above attacking and killing small mammals and birds and even the occasional stray humanoid.
Treasure: The queen’s chamber may be decorated with gems found by workers either from victims or uncut rough stones from their tunneling. Magic treasure and weapons and armor will either be found in their discard piles outside their lair or buried under the fungus in the food gardens.
Scent (Ex): Detects opponents by scent within 30 feet – 60 feet if opponent is upwind, and 15 feet if downwind (double these ranges if odor is strong; triple if overpowering).
Vermin Traits: Mindless - (Immune to mind-influencing effects – Charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects: - Dark-vision 60’, Always Neutral – no sense of morality.
Variation: Leaf cutter Giant ants will defoliate an ever increasing area around their nest to bring the material into the nest to provide raw material for a fungus that they cultivate for their food source. They most often nest in forests with their entrances at the base of an old dead tree.
Variation: Rancher Giant ants will often keep giant aphids from which they suck juices from to produce honey like syrup called Honeydew; In exchange the aphids receive protection from other predatory insects.

Acid Sting (Ex): A giant soldier ant has a stinger and a formic acid producing gland in its abdomen. If it successfully grabs an opponent, it can attempt to sting each round (+3 attack bonus). A hit with the sting attack deals 1d4+1 point of piercing damage and 1d4 points of acid damage.
