Repairing Scratched Wood

Technomancer

First Post
I just got a nice new coffee table. Not 24 hours after setting it up, the cat jumps up and lays down on it. Not wanting her on there, I shooed her off. She scrambled away, causing a nice long scratch as she did so.

It's just one long scratch, doesn't really look that deep. Is there any good way to fix it?

It should be stainable to match, though that may take some experimentation. Depth isn't likely to be a problem. Any reputable paint store should be able to get you started.

But if it has happened once its going to happen again. Consider getting a glass top cut for the table, or lining it with D&D figures with pointy spears to keep the cat-demon away.

No dice. She loves playing with my little men, spears or no.

They make little wood stain pens that you can just fill in a scratch. They are sold at places like Lowe's and Home Depot. Heck, even someplace like Meijer's or Wal Mart has them.

My advice: Instead of shooeing the cat off- pick her up and throw her off. I feel your pain. I got brand new leather furniture and did the same thing with my cat- My couch now has a nice scratch on it.

I assume you have to match the color?

Did the table have a gloss/finish? Does the scratch go into the wood? Was it painted or stained? Answer that and you can find a way to fix it.

If it has a gloss on it, the scratch may not have gone into the wood.
If it went into the wood, and had a gloss you can fill the scratch (with appropriate product), and then reseal the table and it will look like an odd spot of grain.
If it's paint, well yeah you repaint it.

I can give a more specific answer if you can tell exactly what happened (and show photo!)
