Resiliant sphere and spell casting

If a spellcaster is encased in a resiliant sphere, can he or she cast spells while inside the sphere? Does the sphere only prevent spells that are emanations e.g. lightning bolt, magic missle, etc. from leaving the sphere, but party buff spells like bull's strength are okay?

I think the sphere would block line of effect, so the caster could cast spells on him/herself but not on a target outside the sphere.

As Brain said, since the sphere breaks line of effect, the spellcaster can only cast spells on himself and within the area of the sphere (and any spells that do not need line of effect).

Now if you were playing with 3.0e rules, you could sit there safely and summon outsiders with teleporting abilities (starting with lantern archons at 4th and working up from there) so that they appear inside with you and then teleport out to harass your foes.

Needless to say, this loophole was closed in 3.5e as summoned creatures with teleporting powers cannot actually teleport...

Cheers

What spells to not need line of effect, and or what is the exact definition of Line of Effect?

It is essentially a straight, unblocked path between the caster and the point where he wants the spell to take effect. With certain caveats that are too long for me to cover here. Check the definition on pg.176 of the PHB for details. Most spells other than those with a Personal or Touch range need line of effect, but there's no consistent formula to it that I know of.
