But you don't have to wait till the end of your turn to turn it back on.

Spellcaster's turn:
turn ring off (free action)
cast spell (std. action)
turn ring on (free action)
Move (move equiv. action)

Yes, that will work!!

It works in all cases where turning the ring on is not the last thing you do in the round and the last thing you do is not a free action!!!

The turn off/on explanation works with spellcasting, but does not work with attacking. It's silly, I know, but that's how it is (from my understanding, of course).

The rules make no distinction what you do for your standard action between the on/off.
