What about an assassin? Can he get his assassin death strike using a thrown or projectile withen 30'? (We play yes to both questions but I have heard many say no) whats your take?

Any time a character can apply Sneak Attack damage, he can apply Death Attack damage as well.

However, the Assassin's death strike special ability (i.e., the Fort save vs death or paralyzation) only applies when striking with a melee weapon.

There's an Assassin spell in Complete Adventurer that allows the Assassin to make a death attack with a ranged weapon. It's a swift action to cast, I believe.

On the one hand, it kinda sucks to all but eliminate the concept of the Deadly Assassin Sniper, but then again I'd hate for a DM to have an assassin potentially kill my character with one shot from range.
