Slashing. It is an abrasion.
However! Because a failed skill check isn't an attack, weapon based damage resistance doesn't apply, so functionaly its untyped.

Wis save (DC based on how far they slide) or take falling damage. Similar DC to use fine motor skills or swing something in a weaponlike manner (similar to Heat Metal) until they regain hit points or complete a long rest. Note that if they don't fall they don't lose hit points ...

Slashing. It is abrasion not literal burning. Even if it wasn't it seems more on theme for a raging barbarian to be able to take less damage from it than for a, say, a fire genasi.

As for the idea to make it just potentially give disadvantage on tasks with your hands, that's the sort of mechanic that is intellectually pleasing as a rule and feels fair, but that ends up either trivial or absolutely debilitating to the character neither of which seem very conducive to actual fun.

In general, unless something can kill you, I don't think it should do damage. At most I'd think 1 point of slashing (abrasion) damage.
No damage, but a CON save to avoid disadvantage on all tasks using the hands until you finish a rest.
Something like this is best, but I probably wouldn't make it quite so severe. Probably only for an hour or until treated with a Wis/Medicine DC: 10 (no retry). Penalty could also apply to different parts of the body as well, depending on where; social skills after being hanged, for example.
