RPGs in Retirement Homes

Sure. But the big wave of players from the 80s are only in their 50s now. The population of gamers in retirement homes is apt to rise notably in 20 years...

It’s the plan for when we all retire, isn’t it? The trick is all getting into the same care home and having most of our marbles when we get there.

Are you aware of any rpg games being played in retirement homes (pre-pandemic)?...

Why pre-pandemic? Is there something that makes 2019 and earlier different or special?

Has anyone volunteered at a retirement home and offered to run a game?

Yes, I live in a apartment tower in which the 1st, 3 floors are subsidised suites for Persons With Disabilties and Seniors. I'm one of the consultants for the Tenant advisory committee, so gotten to know a number of the more active tenants. Over the past year I've run TTRPGs for them and I'm about to run an adventure for them using a 3rd TTRPG.

I have thought for a while that a retirement home dedicated to playing games would be amazing. Basically a forever game con.

Oldest players I've played with were in their 60's at the time. I have one acquaintance who was still at D&D AL nights in his early 70's.

But the 70's are the mean and median life span of US males... so, no surprise. And some of the first wave of the mid-70's games were in the 20-40 range, many already long dead...

I'm almost 61. A RPG retirement home is not something I would enjoy. Imagine the drama: Edition wars in the corridors allowed only from 9 to 5, the cafeteria divided into pro and anti-D&D camps, story now vs emerging story camps, no-women tables vs all women tables, inclusive vs non-inclusive tables and anti-soloist sentiments.

I want less drama in my later years.
