RttToEE too easy

Emerald

First Post
I have been reading threads recently about how hard the RttToEE is. Because it is so hack and slash heavy me and my husband decided to play it. I am DMing the module and he is running 4 PC through it. They started at 4th and are now 5th. We are still near the beginning, all he has done is clear out the mill and moathouse, but so far he is creaming my monsters. Most of the time they do not stand a chance. Even when the module says that this is a particularly hard encounter and to give bonus EXP for completing it, he finishes the combat in 3-4 rounds and most of his HP intact. We are both dishearted, having expected a meat grinder module with the threat of character deaths looming large. Please tell us the module picks up and we are not in store for one easy battle after the next. We were hoping for something much more challanging.

My husband reads these boards, so try to avoid spoilers please.

My group of seven went through 21 characters, almost all of them in the CRM. Including a TPK. It gets rough. Very rough. Remember that Monte tend to either have underpowered creatures with good tactics, or (more likely) overpowered creatures with bad tactics.

WHich means if you are stupid, its really easy for the monsters to get a leg up on you.

My character died twice both times with instant kills at full hit points.

It's a meat grinder.

edit: I forgot to mention, pretty much everyone who was playing this decided it was too much of a meat grinder and stopped playing. :(

We've lost half our party at one shot. A couple of other characters have come and gone, too.

At one point in CRM, we pretty much just ground to a stand-still. We're about to try a completely different approach. That will either gain us some headway or result in a TPK. Unfortunately, since it means tackling the Fire Temple rather than the Water, it'll probably be the latter. We'll see, though.

Heh. My players would disagree about the easyness of the module; and I'm only a passable DM.

So far there's been one death before the CRM and two very violent deaths within the CRM. There have also been two full retreats that could have gotten very ugly otherwise.

For tips, tricks, errata, suggestions, and related story hours/campaign logs go here: RttToEE.

Happy Hunting.

I don't know what your DMing style is, but we were ground up in that module. I didn't have one character in the whole module that didn't die at least once.

Only one person out of our seven person party made it through without a death, the priestess of Tymora, she got lucky I guess...

I've got to agree with the others on this... the party I'm DMing through this are about half way through the Outer Fane ( after a year!).

Currently only one of the original PC's who started the module has survived. They only lost 1 PC in the lead up to the CRM (to an encounter in the Moat House - he's currently a statue in the courtyard of the Temple of St Cuthbert in Hommlett). but once they got to the Mines the bodycount started spiralling dramatically.

I had to lead them off on a couple of side-treks just to get the levels up so they'd have a chance.

Average party level is now around 10th and they're still taking a beating !!!

I concur with the majority of the posters here - RttToEE is hard enough as soon as you reach the CRM. We've had 6 PC deaths so far.

Lately I did shift to the Boosted Encounters (you can find a link to those on Monte Cook's boards) since I put in to many random encounters early on and the characters are all completely min-maxed by now (the characters who died horribly have been very set on not getting slaughtered again).
