I would like to make one complaint: The font they picked for the body text has characters with an inconsistent height. For example "s" is taller than most other lower-case characters, "t" is shorter than "i", etc.

Nitpicky but it is a little awkward to read for me.

Earlier I had no idea what you were talking about and assumed it was something on your end, but then I got off my Linux laptop and onto my Windows machine and opened the file in Reader... now I know what you mean!
Something about the font that doesn't play well on that combination.

I assume there's a lot of Macs at the WotC offices.

Ah, it's a Windows thing? My printout looks fine but Adobe Reader on Windows 7 looks a bit goofy. I'll have to check what it looks like in Adobe on my Android tablet when I get home.

Yeahm there's an "Olde Tyme Paper" background in the non-printer friendly version.

No, it's the font. Printed it looks good, on my laptop it looks weird.
I haven't tried printing either... but the only differenc between the two for me is:

1 - Non-printer friendly version has an Old Tyme Paper style background (looks like "recycled" paper).

2 - Printer friendly version is copy-pasteable.

The fonts look identical on both (some letters are oddly large, some are offset on the line, etc).

"Breunor" is the example character for character creation.

"Bob" is the player making him.

:)

Thaumaturge.

I caught that too.. I actually LOL when I read it.

Some of my favorite pieces in the Basic Rules is making references to canon characters... Its absolutely perfect. I mean Tika Waylan and Artemis Entreri mentioned in the same paragraph. Pure fandom joy for me.

I also am getting charged up on the return of the Multiverse. I mean Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Darksun and so on and so forth... Hell they even mention Castle Ravenloft in the very beginning... This is very, very cool stuff.

and if that wasn't enough, they even make a David Eddings reference.... Gareth and Riva in the Introduction... Love it.... I will be hunting for more easter eggs tonight.

Heh, they aren't being shy about leveraging the novels are they? Wow, I don't think I've seen that many D&D references in a single page ever. Kinda cool, although, to be honest, other than Dragonlance way, WAY back, I never read any D&D fiction, so, I'm a bit left in the dark.

And they must have a hosepipe for a server. Wow, I clicked the download link and the entire pdf downloaded darn near instantly. From the practical side of things, it looks like WOTC has really learned its lesson over the past few years.
