Scrolls of Cure Light Wounds

Can anyone tell me why in the 3.5 DMG it is possible to create an Arcane scroll of cure light wounds? Is this because the Bard has the spell in his spell list?

If this is the case then why does it cost 50gp when a Divine scroll of cure light wounds costs only 25gp? I understand that it may be for balance reasons but what logic do they put behind the different pricing of the Arcane and Divine scrolls considering that the spell has no material components?

It's because a clerical version of the spell (or a druids) is cast at 1st level, and heals 1d8+1. A bard has to cast it at caster level 2, and it does 1d8+2. Not worth the doubling of the price, but it follows the guidelines for what happens you can use a magic item that has been made at a caster level higher then the minimum.

Yep.

Because for calculation purposes, you assume the guy who can make it the cheapest did. For a divine scroll, that's a 1st-level Cleric.

For an arcane scroll, that's a 2nd-level Bard (who doesn't get 1st-level spells until 2nd).

So, plugging those numbers into the formula 25gp * Spell Level * Caster Level, you get 25gp and 50gp respectively. The divine scroll cures 1d8+1 HP, and the arcane scroll cures 1d8+2 HP, so you do get a little more out of it.

I agree. It's obviously not worth it if you have divine spell casters in the party or a reasonable UMD check. It's also not worth it because a potion is the same price, usable by anyone, and only cures one less hp on average.

Thanks for that guys. That clears up the confusion on the pricing. Does this mean that a Wizard or Sorcerer could cast the spell off of the scroll if they managed to find one?

Only if they somehow got cure light wounds on their class spell list, which is (debatedly) impossible to do.

They could Use Magic Device, however, just like any other class.

No, because in order to use the scroll, it not only has to be the correct type (arcane vs. divine), but the spell it contains must also be on your class spell list.

So, since CLW isn't a Wiz / Sor spell, they can't use even an Arcane scroll of CLW (except, of course, by UMDing it).

I think the way to do it is to get access to the Healing domian (via a prestige class?)

Is there a feat that grants a domain? God, I hope not.

Of course, the wizard could multiclass, but presumably that's not what we're talking about.

The reason I said "debatedly" is because there's a feat that, well, I'll just let Thanee explain it if she wants to. I don't buy it. :p
