I have a psionic warrior who wields a scythe that I've been working on for awhile. At higher levels the scythe averages out to do more damage than a 2-handed sword so don't knock it. I think I fall into the why bother? camp for this very reason.
Specifically:
A scythe does, on average, (5 + x) * 1.45 damage, where x is the character's total damage bonus (including str, magic, specialization, whatever), if the scythe is
keen and the bearer has Improved Crit.
A greatsword does, on average, (7 + x) * 1.3 damage, where x is the character's total damage bonus (including blah-blah-blah), if the greatsword is
keen and the bearer has Improved Crit.
So, at what total damage bonus x does the scythe overtake the greatsword?
(5 + x) * 1.45 > (7 + x) * 1.3
1.45x + 7.25 > 9.1 + 1.3x
.15x > 1.85
x > 12.3333333333333...
So, once your total damage bonus gets up to 13, a
keen scythe outperforms a
keen greatsword... against monsters which are affected by criticals, of course.
EDIT: (That's your damage bonus which is affected by criticals, of course. Not sneak attack or a non-bursting elemental thingie or whatever)
