Second wind is cinematic, it reduces the need for healers or clerics to be only healers, and makes hp a bit more strategic. So yes! I am fine with it being an encounter ability.

It makes more sense or as as much sense as having a healers kit able to heal an absolute truck load of hp.

I chose encounter resource because I feel its part and parcel to the heroic turn around....

But we do have the bloodied condition. You could tie the temp HP (or regular HP, I'm cool either way) to the bloodied condition to create situations where a second wind is actually like a second wind, and not just a meta-game chip to be thrown in. You could then build on it in class features. Maybe barbarians get double the HP from second wind if they are bloodied and raging. Maybe fighters get to use their expertise dice in lieu of hit dice for second wind at a certain level, etc.

I really liked the second wind in 4e. Especially since it's a standard action (for most), it gives a hint about how desperate you are if you use it.

I hate bloodied and I hate second wind.

At least second wind can be easily made into a drop-in optional rule, bloodied not so easily.
'Hating' second wind I can understand (though it sounds a trifle extreme), but with 'hating' bloodied you've lost me. Given that "bloodied" just means "below half hit points", what is it that you dislike about it?

Edit: unless you mean "I hate being below half hit points", which is natural, I suppose... ;)

The whole threshold-in-the-middle concept to trigger good or bad effects.

I use a watered down version in my OD&D games: 1/4 HP recovery, max 2x per day. Keeps the Cleric a little more focused on other stuff, and less need for CLW potions. Makes Fighters a bit tougher.

I do not see why they cannot provide an option for one in NEXT, tho it is easy enough to house rule in. No need for an official version IMO, but I know many are sticklers when it comes to rules.
