Setting: Aleasana--Rules and So Forth...

Looks good Sertimon! Though, I personally think Darkvision 60 ft. would be as appropriate or moreso than Low-Light Vision........ The Black Fist Brotherhood at least does a lot of its work at night, not necessarily on clear nights either. Low-Light Vision works though, just think Darkvision would've fit as well. And it still wouldn't overpower them, heh.

Human ------- Urukh
Any Feat ----- Endurance
Skill Points ---- +2 Survival, +1 Fortitude, Stability, Weapon Familiarity
Balanced scores, flexibility --- +2 Str, -2 Int, -2 Cha, Low-Light Vision or Darkvision

Maybe Urukh should get both Low-Light Vision and Darkvision? :D

Isslen, if made a PC race, should wait until more defined in the main Aleasana thread.

For Bodai or Juni, I think Juni are definitely going to have the usual gnomish +2 Con and probably some Survival bonus; their racial affinity for illusions or whatnot may be altered though to divinations or conjurations instead, or dropped in favor of something else; their ability to speak with burrowing mammals would likely change to function with equines and/or camels/llamas, or perhaps lizards and snakes. Bodai are likely to have Handle Animal and/or Ride bonuses, and maybe a Craft (Weaving) bonus.

Dvergar and Shay likely remain as per the core rules, possibly with one or two very minor changes. I.E. Shay may be of the Fey type instead of Humanoid.

The Juni!

Rhialto: Totally agree. There's not very much info on the Isslen yet! Sure, I'll leave them to you if you want to stat them :)

Arkhandus: Neat idea about giving them both Darkvision and Low-Light Vision. I am a little thorn whether it would be balanced as PC race. Are we talking about up to 30 or up to 60 feet of darkvision?

Here's the changes made to the Juni. Suggestions for are more than welcome!

JUNI
The nomadic tribes of the juni used on occupy the harsh, Southern Desert, before they were forced out by some unknown threat (only known to the juni themselves). They settled in the home of the bodai, much to their anger. Now the juni and bodai constantly war with each other.
Juni Traits (Ex): Juni possess the following racial traits.
-- -2 Strength, +2 Constitution: Juni are a hardy people, but their small size makes them less powerful than other races.
-- Small size.
-- A juni's base land speed is 20 feet.
-- Low-Light Vision.
-- +2 racial bonus on saving throws against the effects of hot weather: Juni are resistant to the ordeals of the blazing desert sun.
-- +2 racial bonus on Knowledge (nature) checks: Juni are well-versed in the lore of the natural world.
-- +2 racial bonus on Perform (oratory) checks: Juni have strong oral traditions.
-- +2 racial bonus on Survival checks: Juni are adapted to life in harsh environments.
-- +4 racial bonus on Hide checks when in a desert area. Juni are clever and used to hide from desert predators that are larger than themselves.
-- Hardiness (Ex): A juni can go twice as long as other races without food or water before suffering the effects of starvation or thirst.
-- Spell-Like Abilities: 1/day--speak with animals (reptile creatures only, duration 1 minute). A juni with a Charisma score of at least 10 also has the following spell-like abilities: 1/day--flare, know direction, message. Caster level 1st; save DC 10 + juni's Cha modifier + spell level.
-- +1 racial bonus on all saving throws: Juni are surprisingly capable of avoiding mishaps.
-- Juni receives Perform (oratory) and Survival as permanent class skills.
-- Favored Class: Bard.

Designer's Notes: I choose to go with a druidic theme rather than a bardic one. I felt that druids were more appropriate because it was mentioned that juni were known to dabble in the arts of mysticism and such. Made more sense IMO.

It was mentioned somewhere in the Aleasana thread that the juni's warpoines were somewhat lizard-like, so I've changed their affinity with burrowing animals to reptiles instead. I thought about giving them a racial bonus against bodai, but opted to remove it in favor for other abilities.

I wanted to keep the "add +1 to the Difficulty Class ...", but couldn't find an appropriate school to fit the theme. I don't think it would overpower them to give such an ability in addition to what they already have. The Illusion school seems kinda of out of place ... any suggestions?

I did not make the juni cannibalistic (thou giving them a bite attack would be cool), despite the rumors ;)

nice Juni write up. Not too sure about the choice of Druid though especially if you consider Ikontents statement about the grasslands being "the most green the Juni had ever seen" (Rhialto's write up?)

If you've got a whole lot of Druids running around casting create water and plant growth your not going to have a arid desert for long. Then theres the wee problem of Wild shape (although the idea of a horde of Juni serpents rushing through the sand while an airbourne contgent soars above in the form of eagles is kinda kewl)

Now Ranger I might accept...

Juni's Favored Class

Ranger also makes a fine choice for favored class. So does bard and wizard (diviner) … and druid :) I'd be happy to change it if more people object to the druid being their favored class.

Yes, if they had plenty of druids they could theoretically change the whole ecosystem and turn the deserts green. Although just because they have the power to do so, doesn't mean that they have to wield it. The juni, and especially juni druids, would probably have more respect for nature than to change it completely. Perhaps the juni view the desert as "strengthen their kin" or something similar.

Another reason for picking the druid as favored class is the mention of sand magic, although the druid doesn't have much of that. Does anyone have Sandstorm by the way? We might find something interesting in that book. Otherwise we could force the juni to take a flavor specific druid class ("sand shaper" or something) without access to water and/or plant spells.

Wildshape could be a problem thou. Especially if we have hordes of juni tribesmen turning into ferocious animals :)

Changes ...

Changes to the races
I've made some changes based on feedback above. Thanks!

Juni: +2 racial bonus on Knowledge (nature) checks: Juni are well-versed in the lore of the natural world.

Urukh: Darkvision up to 60 feet. In addition, an urukh has low-light vision which allows it to see twice as far as a human in low-light conditions.

I'll post the stats on the bodai later tonight.

My vote for Juni favored class is either Bard or Barbarian. Neither Ranger nor Druid really works for me. Handwaving Druid into a desert culture just doesn't make sense to me. If they're from the desert they survive through cunning and skill, not through magic. Magic is used to fight their enemies, yes, but Druidism doesn't seem to me the way that it might be done.

I can see the Juni having Sorcerors or Witches that would allow entry into a Sand Mage (or Sand Witch :D) Prestige class... but I don't see this as their favored class.

Juni's Favored Class changed to Bard!

Alright, more people seem to be against the idea of juni having druid as favored class ... I am going to change it back to bard, thus making them "tale-telling elders" as Rhialto put it so nicely. I'll probably have to change the juni somewhat (their spell-like abilities should be based on Charisma now, match the bardic spell list etc)

The Bodai!

As always, input and suggestions for improvements are welcome!

BODAI
The Bodai is a race famed for their horsemanship and ferocity, and lives in the grasslands. They're in constant conflict with the Juni people from the desert.
Bodai Traits (Ex): Bodai possess the following racial traits.
-- -2 Strength, +2 Dexterity: Bodai are quick and agile, but their lithe forms make them weaker than other races.
-- Small size.
-- A bodai's base land speed is 20 feet.
-- Weapon Proficiency: Bodai receive the Martial Weapon Proficiency feats for shortbow (and composite shortbow). They train exclusively with bows when hunting prey or protecting their native grasslands.
-- +2 racial bonus on all Craft checks related to working with cloth and fur.
-- +2 racial bonus on Listen and Spot checks: Bodai have keen senses.
-- +2 racial bonus on Move Silently checks: Bodai are skilled at sneaking up quietly on others.
-- +3 racial bonus on Ride checks: Bodai are excellent horse riders.
-- Mounted Marksman (Ex): All bodai are used to fight on mounted horses. A bodai receives a +2 circumstance bonus on ranged attack rolls made from horseback.
-- +2 morale bonus on saving throws against fear: Bodai are fearless warriors.
-- Bodai receives Listen and Spot as permanent class skills.
-- Favored Class: Ranger.

Designer's Notes: I could see them as either barbarian or ranger as their favored class. Barbarian because they are often seen as ferocious warriors or rangers because of their skill in archery. I made up the archery bit and don't know whether it is appropriate or not for the theme of this race. I thought it might fit because it makes hunting in the grasslands a lot easier when using ranged weapons. It might also be intruding on the elf's turf with the bow stuff. Hunting with slings seem so ... so puny for a race that is supposed to be fierce :P

Before I gave the bodai (and juni) racial attack bonus against each other, however, I decided to remove it. The reason for this is that it might bring unnecessary tension between players in a party with one of each races.

I might have "shoe-horned" the bodai into the ranger niche ... for good or bad. I don't know if this fits the vision of the race. Tell me what you think.
