Shinobi (monk archetype)

Fast Stealth (Ex) at 2nd level a shinobi monk gains the ability to move a full speed and maintain stealth with no penalties, this replaces the bonus feat.

Clouded Mind (Ex) at 3rd level a shinobi monk gains a +2 bonus to saving throws versus detection spells. This replaces Still Mind.

Ki Pool (Ex) at 4th level a shinobi monk gains a pool of ki points, supernatural energy he can use to accomplish many amazing feats. The number of points in a shinobi monk's ki pool is equal to 1/2 his shinobi monk level + Wisdom modifier. At 4th level and every four levels thereafter, a shinobi monk must select a ki power from the general ki powers list. At 12th and above a shinobi monk may select one of the greater ki powers, but must meet all prerequesites and may have no more than 2 greater ki powers. (This is an alternate reading of the monk's ki pool class feature as it applies to Kaidan.)

Stealer In (Ex) at 5th level a shinobi monk gains a competence bonus to his stealth checks equal to 1/2 his shinobi monk level, rounded down. This replaces Purity of Body.

Displacement (Su) at 13th level a shinobi monk gains the effects of a displacement spell for 1 round as a swift action, but may not activate it once combat is engaged. He can do this a number of times per day based on 1/4 his shinobi monk level rounded down. This replaces Diamond Body.

Assassinate (Ex) at 15th level a shinobi monk gains the ability to perform an assassination attempt. After studying his target for 3 rounds, on a successful hit with a single strike as a standard action his opponent is slain unless the target succeeds on a Fort check. This replaces Quivering Palm.

Hide in Plain Sight (Ex) at 17th level a shinobi monk gains the ability to perform the stealth skill even while being observed. This replaces Timeless Body.

Smoke Body (Su) at 19th level a shinobi monk gains the ability to transform himself into vaporous smoke form for a number of rounds equal to his Wisdom modifier. He can move through any sized opening and move at his normal movement rate. This ability replaces Empty Body.

Twin Self (Su) at 20th level a shinobi monk gains the ability to split himself into two beings, each have half his normal hit dice for a number of rounds equal to his Wisdom score, though each retain his full abilities in normal form. Any ki powers use the shinobi monk's ki pool as a shared source. The twin being is not equipped, however he can be equipped. The two beings can be up to 120' feet apart, but must be within 30' feet of each other at the end of the duration, or sudden reunification will stun the shinobi monk unless he succeeds on Fort check, but is staggered for 1d4 rounds. If the twin being is separated by a greater distance than 120 feet or is killed, the shinobi monk must make a successful Fort check or is stunned for 1 round, even if he saves he is staggered for 1d4 rounds. This replaces Perfect Self.

Applying to all races and classes of Kaidan: I want to (optionally) include the Ki Potential Trait - this allows any person born in Kaidan having a minimum of 4 HD access to the Activate Ki feat.

I plan to create an expanded list of Ki powers, using some 3x ki powers, and some completely new ones which would apply to this trait, give monks more things to do, and build a ninja based on ki powers as well.

Activate Ki feat grants a Ki Pool of 2 points (half the current HD, as per monk, but does not increase with level and never more than 2 points, even if taken at higher level). Though may take the Extra Ki feat for 1 more ki point for 3 total.

Ki Powers:

In Kaidan a power of inner strength is inherent in all living beings called Ki which can be tapped to manifest limited spell-like powers. Because monks always possess ki powers, they serve as tutors to help others access their ki.

This is an expanded ki powers list usable in Kaidan. The general ki powers list consist of ki powers accessable by all classes with a ki pool, including those possessing the Ki Potential Trait and Activate Ki feat. The greater ki powers list is limited to Ki classes which only include monk and shinobi, at a minimum of 12th level. Only five ki powers can be acquired by 20th level, 1 per 4 levels starting at 4th. No more than 2 greater ki powers can be selected.

General Ki Powers List:

Ghost Step - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) you can become invisible for 1 round. By spending 2 ki points, you can become invisible for 1 round + 1 round per WIS bonus.

Ghost Sight - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) you can see invisible for 1 round. By spending 2 ki points, users can see invisible for 1 round + 1 round per WIS bonus.

Ki Armor - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) when unencumbered you can add your WIS bonus to AC for a number of rounds equal to your WIS bonus. This bonus does not stack with other WIS based bonuses to AC.

Ki Punch - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) you can perform unarmed strikes at distance up to 30' range, and works as natural reach, but you do not threaten your opponents square. This effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to your WIS bonus.

Ki Levitation - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) you may levitate up to your normal height and remain hovering in place for a number of rounds equal to you WIS bonus.

Ki Step - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) ignore one aspect of the terrain for a number of rounds equal to your WIS bonus, including walking on ice or water and other difficult terrains.

Ki Stride - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) you can move up to your speed, this does not count as a move action. This may still incur Attacks of Opportunity by opponents in adjacent squares.

Perserverance - by spending a ki point you can remove the effects of hunger and thirst for a single day, without negative effect. If you spend 2 ki points (as a swift action) you can increase the duration to a number of days equal to your WIS bonus.

Withstand - by spending a ki point (as a swift action) you can negate the effects of one condition for a single round, by spending 2 ki points (as a swift action) you can extend the duration for a number of rounds equal to your WIS bonus. This power does not remove the condition.

Greater Ki Powers List:

Abundant Step - (as per PRD)

Improved Ghost Sight - by spending 2 ki points (as a swift action) you gain true seeing for 1 round, by spending 2 additional ki points you can extend the duration to a number of rounds equal to your WIS bonus.

Improved Ghost Step - by spending 2 points of ki (as a swift action) can turn ethereal for 1 round. By spending 2 more ki points you can extend this duration to a number of rounds equal to your WIS bonus.

Improved Ki Punch - by spending 2 ki points (as a swift action) functions as Ki Punch, but at a range of 60'

well I'n his favours this is a monk archetype not a rogue one.

at first glance the only thing I can think of is assassinate comes too late. it's harder to set up than the power it replaces and ALOT of classes that get it have it ALOT earlier.

The ki punch seems a bit strong.

While I don't disagree, I'm trying to accomplish two things with this. The Ki Punch ki power is intended as an improvement to monk as well. In Kaidan, the monk can freely choose from the list as well, and I'm trying in some small way to fix MAD skills problem. Also for flavor I think this power fits. It's balanced by only allowing a 30' distance for it's range. (It's a little over-powered, but not overly much.)

I actually have Endzeitgeist (the reviewer) as one of project's patrons and he too agreed it was a bit OP, but also think it fits, so not too out of line.

I just have to wonder if this is necessary, what with the Paizo ninja coming out.

Three things.

One I think a monk is a better fit for a ninja, than a rogue could ever be.

Two, this is for Kaidan, my commercial project, and like Japan, ninja isn't a specific class, rather it's a family of classes that work together to accomplish their covert activity. An entire clan/village houses the Shinobi clan which include: bard, monk, ranger, rogue and sorcerer, each with their own shinobi archetype. I will post my shinobi classes in this thread over the next few days. I don't think I need to make shinobi (rogue archetype) though, as the UC ninja fills that position well.

Three, from the APG, the new ki feats of Spider Walk and Cloud Walk require Slow Fall as a prerequisite which means its for monk. Look at those ki feats. Isn't that the epitome of Ninja? This more than anything else tells me that Paizo had intentions of monk being a ninja. Just because they pull a 180 degrees with the UC Ninja based on a rogue, doesn't change my thinking.

I agree as well, but I think the UC Ninja getting assassinate early is too early (in fact getting the Ki Pool at 2nd level instead of 4th like a monk is too early as well). Taking the Assassin prestige class allows you to get assassinate way sooner, but then you lose out on capstone abilities by taking a prestige class. I'd like to give Assassinate to monk earlier, but it doesn't balance well with the existing monk build. Assassinate is definitely a fit as a trade for Quivering Palm. I wish I could build a ninja monk to have assassinate sooner, but then it would be greatly OP compared to the base monk.

Once I tweak this monk build, I intend to publish it in a Kaidan supplement called Shinobi, which will include all five shinobi class archetype builds, the complete new Ki powers lists, a few new feats, a few new bard and sorcerer spells, a few ninja-based magic items, and the full origins history background fluff, as it fits the setting.

I've gotten some good feedback so far, but I need more, that's why I posted it here.

Shinobi (ranger archetype)

Shinobi (ranger archetype):

Ranger's Focus (Ex) at 1st level, once per day a shinobi ranger can focus on a single enemy within line of sight as a swift action. (This uses the rules from the APG under Guide 'ranger archetype'.) This replaces Favored Enemy.

Ninjutsu Combat Style (Ex) at 1st level a shinobi ranger may add ninjutsu as an available combat style. Blind-Fight, Improved Initiative, Mobility, Point Blank Shot, and Quickdraw; at 6th level add Spring Attack and Wind Stance; at 12th level add Improvised Weapon Mastery and Lightening Stance.

Hunter's Senses (Ex) at 4th level a shinobi ranger gains a bonus to Perception checks equal to 1/2 his shinobi ranger level rounded down. This replaces Hunter's Bond.

Ki Pool (Su) at 4th level a shinobi ranger eschews divine spell casting in place of using the ki pool which it gains at this level. (Same rules as Shinobi monk).

uc ninja getting it early? they get it lvl 10. 5 levels after the assassin master spy gets it lvl 3 so probably lvl 10. anyhow semantics I guess. just need the npc targets to sometimes fail the save which lvl 15 will be hard.

Perhaps, I'll look at the possibility of giving this monk archetype assassinate at 10 level - I don't know how I'll balance it (unless I compare it directly to UC Ninja, rather than monk...)

I'd like to hear more about his archetypical twin, Shadoobi
(shattered, shattered)
.

Do you mean his "Twin" class feature, or the other archetypes for shinobi?

I am working on a Shinobi (bard archetype), but I haven't figured out the wording on his new Bardic Performance replacement abilities, but here is what I have so far...

Shinobi (bard archetype)

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: a shinobi bard is proficient with all simple weapons, Kaidan blades and her clan's preferred weapon.

Bonus Skills: a shinobi bard learns Perform (conversation, dance or singing) choose one, and Profession (geisha or courtesan) choose one.

Encourage Trust (Su) at 1st level a shinobi bard gains a +1 Charisma bonus to enchantment spells and charisma based checks, this increases to +2 at 5th level, +3 at 11th, and +4 at 17th level. This replaces Inspire Courage.

Bardic Performance: a shinobi bard gains the following types of bardic performance.

Notice Me (Su): at 1st level a shinobi bard can compel onlookers to focus on her. This can be used as the start of a seduction attempt or as a means of misdirectly the attention away from another in or out of combat. Will check to avoid looking at her.

Seduction (Su): at 3rd level a shinobi bard...

Trusted Confidant (Su): at 8th level a shinobi bard...

Soul Mate (Su): at 14th level a shinobi bard...

Carnal Knowledge: after spending 3 rounds studying a targetted person in a direct conversation, a shinobi bard recognizes a target's sexual preference, fetishes, and the most likely means of bringing pleasure. This replaces Bardic Knowledge.

(As mentioned I need to finish developing the Bardic Performance types, but basically the Shinobi Bard makes for an excellent spy, the planter of false information, and the ruiner of reputations.)
