Just a thought, but given they are still legal & from a PHB, but not in the 2024 PHB, should they s

There is a narrative role, I agree. I think it can be filled better filled than with the 2014 half-elf or half-orc. A system that allows multiple mixed species to exist (beyond elf/human and orc/human) even if we have to wait for a later splat book, is a far better option than bringing back the half elf and half orc.

A purely optional add-on doesn't have lore attached to it, and it is way less visible than having one or two accepted options at the "species" level. Optional add-ons don't get NPCs in modules, and they don't show up in random splash art either. It is just completely not the right tool for the need, which is completely about lore and visibility. (How many custom race characters have appeared anywhere post-Tasha?)

Look, I'm not against some module for custom mix/mix origin, but the want for it was weaponized to take away what worked fairly well. And by itself it only makes something that has been marginalized even more marginal.

Again

What are the good reasons to not include them under new core names?
The SRD doesn't include much of the PHB.

Go look at the 5.1 SRD. It's missing Drow, wood elf, mountain dwarf, forest gnome, stout halfling, all subclasses but berserker, lore bard, life domain, land druid, champion, open hand monk, devotion paladin, Hunter, thief, draconic sorcerer, fiend warlock, and evoker. It's also missing every background but Acolyte and every feat but grappler. It's also missing 1/3rd of all the spells, 70% of the magic items, and the vast majority of the Monster Manual.

The half-elf, which isn't even in the PHB, isn't any more important than the eldritch knight, the drow elf, or the soldier background.

Sure they do. Goliaths played a role in Icewind Dale, tabaxi are in Tomb of Annihilation.

And the fight is lost. The PHB is out. Even if the half elf is put in the next book, it's as "visible " as the triton or the firbolg. Might as well get a system that allows for true mixed heritage rather than two officially sanctioned pairings.

I will note that the aforementioned Level Up mixed heritage system is available through that 5e game's freely accessible SRD.

That's not answering the question.

Everything doesn't belong in the SRD.
Again

What are the good reasons to not include the half elf and half orc under new names in the SRD and thus also the PHB?

There is a good reason why the SRD didn't have the eldritch knight. The SRD had the champion which displayed the mechanical structure and baseline of what a fighter subclass would be.

There is a good reason why the SRD didn't include the wood elf. the SRD had the high elf which displayed the mechanical structure and baseline of what an elf sub race would be.

The half elf and/or the half orc would display the mechanical structure and baseline of what a mixed species would be.
