Shurikens and Sneak Damage

Marimmar

First Post
First of all I want to apologize for asking this question since I presume that it has been answered a lot of times but...

If my rogue throws shurikens, he gets to throw three stars instead of only a single one per attack. Do I get to deal sneak damage with every shuriken or is it somehow limited?

I'm about to play my first rogue ever and stumbled over this during the character design process and would consider it broken somehow.

Thanx for any suggestions.

You can make one sneak attack per attack you make.

When you throw 3 shuriken it is a single attack, even though you make 3 attack rolls. Thus only one of the shuriken (the first one that hits) deals sneak attack damage.

IC, so it's still a great weapon for rogues since it allows three chances to get a sneak attack in.

Thanx for the help. :)

And you can poison each one. Make them magical so that each gets +1d6 flame damage. There are many things that make these weapons worth while.

Well met!

Sorry, but it doesn't do that. Sneak damage only applies to the first shuriken, meaning if your first attack roll misses you don't deal all your extra d6's. Go for poisoning the little buggers.

You throw all three shuriken at the same time.

Which one is first?

In my campaign, they all are. Otherwise they really aren't worth the cost of the feat.

According to the FAQ:

An earlier question says a rogue deals extra damage with
a sneak attack anytime the target is denied Dexterity bonus
to AC or anytime the rogue flanks the target, no matter
how many attacks the rogue makes. But it also says you
apply sneak attack damage only once per attack. If you use
one attack to throw three shuriken, you get to apply sneak
attack. Which is correct?

They're both correct. The difference here is the number of
attack rolls you make with one attack. You can throw up to
three shuriken with one attack. If you do so, you're still making
only one attack, even though you're making more than one
attack roll. Only the first shuriken in the volley can be a sneak
attack. Note that this also means that you don't have to use the
full attack action to throw multiple shuriken.

So you only get one chance at a sneak attack.

Thanks for the input, I see your point. As this weapon has not been used in my game yet, I thought it would be fair enough to rule it like I described above. Seems experience (and probably being a native speaker) is far more useful than brooding alone in the dark.

But in case I'm having a really bad day, you roll three attacks, if at least one hits, you score sneak damage. Is that right?

Nope.

According to the FAQ, you roll three attacks. On the first one (if it hits), you get sneak attack damage. The remaining two have no chance for sneak attack damage.

Other bonus damage

Has there been any ruling on other types of precision-based bonus damage, such as Point Blank Shot, Weapon Specialization, or a ranger's favored enemy bonus? If these bonuses aren't limited like sneak attack is, shuriken are much more appealing, since each one could do 4 points of damage within 30'. A 4th level fighter with EWP: Shuriken, WF: Shuriken, Point Blank Shot, Rapid Shot, and WS: Shuriken could throw 6/round, for up to 24 points of damage. Of course, the character wouldn't be good for much else, but a halfling with low Str could do quite well following this path, since the shuriken don't allow a Str bonus anyway, and they get a racial bonus with thrown weapons.
