Skill Focus on Speak or Read/Write Language

... what happens?

a) wasted a feat.
b) gain 2 new lanuages?
c) something else...

Hmm. And I wanted to ask another question, but can`t remind it...

There's no point in taking Skill Focus with languages, since there's no such thing as a skill check for language use. The rules assume that if you spend even one skill point in a language, you know everything you need to know about that language.

The answer is a) you have wasted a perfectly good feat.

Since Skill Focus gives you +2 on all skill checks with the selected skill and Speak Language doesn't require any skill checks, ever.

You could do it but it would be pointless.

Actually you need to spend enough skill points to gain one skill rank to be fluent in a speech language and/or literate in a written language.

For some classes, Language is a cross-class skill (costs 2 skill points).

Nit-picking, are we.

Well it doesn't change the fact that Speak Languages doesn't require skill check which is what is augmented with Skill Focus.

I concur. In D&D you speak fluently or read proficiently in whatever language you learn.

In marked contrast with reality, at least as represented on Internet message boards, where this seems to be the exception rather than the rule ...

Heh, that and the fact that you also speak a number of additional languages beyond your native tongue, equivalent to your Int bonus. Another contrast with reality. D&D is populated with many bilinguals, more than the US alone.

On a side note, I would like add (or brag if you like) that I speak 3 languages fluently and 3 others with (a heavy) accent.
