Sky High

I just rented this movie last night and watched it with the wife. This is a damn good flick. I really liked it. I was as entertained and thrilled by it as I was The Incredibles.

Just FYI.

Commander and Jetstream have the best-looking costumes of any superheroes I've seen. I *want* a Commander costume; it is just so cool.

[Oh, and Jetstream is one fine-lookin' mom!]

Tempting to be a supervillian just to see her in action.

Overall, I found this movie a bit on the painful side myself. The Incredibles definately hit the same topic with more thoughtfulness. However, it does have prodigious comic relief in Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead movies), Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald (both of Kids in the Hall fame.) These guys are worth seeing the movie for. I still giggle over the whole "dating the good and evil twins" gag.

It was a cute movie, but as mentioned above, The Incredibles blew it away. I also thought that a movie about superheroes would look a little better that your standard Power Rangers FX. Don't get me wrong, it's watchable, but it strikes me as a "me too" movie jumping on the current Superhero bandwagon.

And I have to agree with Firebeetle that Mr. Boy was one of the funniest elements in the movie.

I thought it was cute and fun, but not nearly as impressive as The Incredibles. It seemed rather like a Disney-ized Harry Potter, with superheroes instead of wizards. I'll bet Disney is kicking themselves that they didn't get the rights to Harry Potter. ;)

Still, I did like what they did with the superpowers, especially the angry fiery kid. And Mr. Boy was indeed a hoot. Did you watch the special features with the deleted scenes? You get to see a bit more about Mr. Boy's relationship with The Commander. :D

I'll echo thoughts above about this movie not being as good as The Incredibles (one of the best movies I've ever seen). Sky High was alot of fun and was much more entertaining that I thought it would be. Played to cliches nicely and had some inspired cameos (Linda Carter as the principal, Bruce Campbell as Coach, etc). Overall, good stuff and I wouldn't mind watching it again.

And yes, Kelly Preston is hawt.

Here's my review from another message board after I saw it with my kids last summer:

Sky High which is a live action Disney superhero about a family of superheroes whose son goes off to his first day of High School, at a levitating school above the Earth for the children of superheroes. The movie was a lot of fun, with great performances, with Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston as the superhero parents, Bruce Campbell as the gym teacher, Lynda Carter as the school principal and Dave Foley as a middle-aged former sidekick who now teaches the Sidekick’s class. The high school kids had all of the usual High School clicks – jocks, brains, bullies, hoods and nerds – only with the twist of then all having super powers. Jani said that she could relate most of the students to people she goes to school with. I highly recommend this great family film.

I've yet to see it but some friends mentioned it last week. It completely slipped under my radar and I heard absolutley no buzz about it until it was on DVD. Was this a direct to DVD release or what?

It was definitely better than I expected it to be, I'll give it that.

However, putting it in the same game as The Incredibles is doing the latter movie an injustice. The Incredibles is, IMO, the best superhero flick out there so far. It's certainly a better adaptation of Fantastic Four than the movie of same name was. Wait, did I actually say that?
