Slightly OT: Yea Gods I'm too powerful for my level!!

Nightfall

Sage of the Scarred Lands
Okay people your friend the Sage has a problem that maybe not many gamers encounter. I have a TOO friendly/heavy Monty Haul DM, and he's turned my sorcerer in the next Muad-dib. (Or darn near close too it)

See as part of my "theme" for my character, a sorcerer with the Scion Feat (a special sorcerer feat from R&R2, specifically, Bloodline of Power for those wanting to know.) my goal is to learn to master and have great sorcerous power BUT I don't rely that much on magic items...save the one I covet. A Ring of Mesos. For those that don't know this particular item, the ring acts like a supped up version of a ring of wizardry, doubling my spells per day for 1st through 4th level. (I give you a moment to pause the ramifications of that.) Not only that however it's power allows me to be able to cast metamagic spells more quickly, meaning that it no longer takes a full round for me to enact say an Empower Magic Missile. (Again I give you a moment to pause about that.)

Now I was planning to craft it and make it myself (some time after 12th level) but my "good-natured" Dm GAVE me the darn thing. And this is only at 5th level folks. So my question is, what the heck do I? I mean I don't want to say "Here take it back" because it will help me and thus the party...but at this level. The DM in me screaming to say "Stop the insanity!" So comments, questions, help would be most appreciated.

Try talking to the DM, and tell him that you'd like to work into your character's story the creation of an item of power like that, and that you'd rather it come later. Rather than have this one get fudged off the record from nowhere, suggest that it be flawed in some way, and soon break... leaving your character's desire for one in the future even stronger.

If you really are serious about not abusing it, you can say your character feels he is "not ready" for the ring yet. It would be safer if you put the ring away for now, and only use it for emergencies. As you become more confident, you will eventually allow yourself full access to the ring's powers.

Use it to become a powermad tyrant and wreck the campaign, then use that as a example of what happens when you give out magic items that are too powerful. That'd teach him a lesson.

Or you could take the DM aside and point out that this might really overbalance the game at this low of a level. Come up with a good storyline about the item, (it's cursed, it only works on the day after it has been annointed with human blood, It's intelligent and tries to take control every time you put it on, etc.........) Sell the DM on how much this story would help to balance out the item.

Well, just because you _can_ cast N = infinity spells per day, doesn't mean you _have_ to cast them all....

Not quite THAT charasmatic, Hong...

jdavis: I'll wait until I get a few more levels. Casting LOTS of 3-4th level spells might be fun....

But more likely I might just talk to the Dm..or try it out a few sessions and then if I feel I'm not having fun/hindering stuff, I'll talk with the DM. Thanks guys.

It's really not THAT powerful.

You are only doubling your base 1st and 2nd level spells, since that's all you can cast now. So it's an extra 10 spells. But no more than a Ring of Wizardry 1 and 2 will get you.

Sure it's worth effectively 360,000 gp, since it's only 1 ring slot... but you can't use the higher level effects until you're higher level. Right now it's really worth only 100,000 gp.

The changing time of metamagic isn't really a big issue. We changed that in our campaigns so Sorcerers cast empowered magic missiles at the same speed as Wizards and there's no real change to the system.

I'd let him know how my inner DM is feeling, and then, if he realizes his error (as you see it) express my willingness to either come up with some nifty plot to work it out of the character's hands, maybe to end up back in it sometime later possibly (and taunting him the whole ride there, teasing him always out of reach ... no "my precioussss" jokes).

As the character, I'd frankly do nothing to try to get rid of it... if it was all I wanted, and I achieved it- Huzzah!... however, this leaves something of an empty taste on the palette of great accomplishments.. I mean- 5th level, and his most craved for material possession is found. There's nothing left to long for except pure, stereotypical (frankly) leveling spell gainin' power. Empty, empty, empty- without any further understanding of the character's backplot.

I'd personally go for this ring to be lost/stolen/eaten by a 6 inch tall golem, and this to be a really excellent way to justify a desire to find the Ring of Mesos.

Pretend you don't know how to activate it and keep it until you think your character is ready for it.
This should be easy to set up with your DM.

Nice item, btw. I want one too.
No, wait, I'm the SL DM. Sh...!
