D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

i think the grid of nine + unaligned work plenty well, they describe a character's general mindset, what they value in the world and are inclined to use but are not a straightjacket of their actions.

This has always been the way I've used it, as a kind of shorthand for the general philosophical outlook of the character.

Well, not to uncleanse your palate, but I do feel it's worth mentioning that the 5e formulation of alignment (and hence the broad concept) was officially added to the creative commons today, which is kind of a big deal in terms of everyone being able to (with unambiguous legal protection) publish their own damned version of alignments.

I'll see myself out.

So what you are saying...is Alignment now gets to live forever? 😍

I would be okay if a future version of D&D didn't have it but it's expected so we're stuck with alignment or so it seems
Are we? Alignment seems to be largely irrelevant in 5th edition. You can be a paladin of any alignment and spells like Detect Good/Evil don't work the same way they did in previous editions. DO monks still have to be lawful even? I like alignment, but haven't bothered with even asking my players about it in regards to their characters.

I like the 9 + unaligned. Although I'm a little more partial to d20 modern's Allegiances. It could be an alignment, a group, a nation, a person, or a belief/ethical system.
