D&D 5E So, I kind of want to stay with 2014 rules. What are my longterm options?

So, if you primarily plan on GMing, and you plan on using 5E plus some compatible stuff, does it really matter what PHB the players use?

You have to buy the books correct and then pay for a subscription to share them with your players, right?
Yep :)

If you want to share what legacy content you have with your players (since if they're new, they literally can't buy it anymore), you have to pay a subscription fee every month.

And you're still not protected from the end case where they just pull the plug on the platform (see: D&D Insider)

You are exactly in the same position I am, for mostly the same reasons.

Some publishers are suposed to come up with SRD 5.1 adjacent product:
  • ToV -> Not seeing much improvement over regular 5.1.
  • C7D20 -> Will probably be really cool....once they get to it...
  • Nimble 5e -> Looks mostly like a bunch of houserules from the publisher home game.

My current stance is to keep to the SRD 5.1 and pilfer the Playtest/UA packets (from 2010, 2014 or eventually 2024) for subclasses and variant rules.

Or just keep PHB up to Tasha's and never make the transition to 2024 revision. If a player want a subclass from 5e24 (World Tree barb, Dance bard) , they'll bring it over to 2014 rules, not the other way around.

I Don't plan to change to the new rules and don't see an issue. My games are on a brief break - on account of the real world giving me a stroke - but I've had no interest in the 2024 hullabaloo, and my players haven't shown any either. Why should it be any fuss at all, sticking with our current rules?

Pretty sure one of my players bought the core books 3 or 4 years ago so as long as he can log into his account, he should still have access, we'll just have to pay for the subscription again. If we decide to upgrade to 2024 then we can mix and match options from both versions I'm guessing? If not, then their whole backwards compatibility spiel is complete 🐮:poop:!!

Depending on where you live it's perfectly legal to scan in your looks and make a PDF and print the parts you need for personal use.

I have a spiral bound phb/DMG combo with a slight reformat and editing change that I use way more than anything else 5e related

The existing 5e material is cheaper than ever, and there’s tons of support with existing 5e products and adventures from companies like Kobold Press, Modiphius, as well as individual designers on DMsGuild. If you choose, you don’t have to do anything except stand pat with what you’ve got.
