D&D 5E So, this is it.

I feel a classic case of the sonic cycle. At first I was intrigued by the idea of a simplified game that cleaned up the bloat and grind of 4e. Then as more detailed emerged that it would be heavily modeled after a weird combination of 1e and 3e I became rather disenchanted. Finally, my group finished its 4e campaign happily and we've moved around to other systems. We have no interest in 5e. Not to begrudge anyone who wants to play it but to me it just doesn't look interesting, appealing, or dare I say... fun.

I'll probably come back around when 6e starts rearing its ugly head, if D&D is still around as a brand at that point.

But the more I see revealed, the more a little voice tells me "you did right hoping for the best but expecting the worst". I was hoping 5th ed would end up dethroning the current king TTRPG of my area (pathfinder, which I'm not a fan of) while also being a game I could download the free pdf and enjoy.

I'm curious what -exactly- did you expect?

After seeing the revealed character sheet and how rather boring the fighter looks (although i will admit, this is the bare-bones simple fighter) it doesn't immediately make me want to throw cash at the game. Going to go on a limb and guess that this is probably going to be the fighter we see in the Basic game.

It's been stated that the Pregens are all made with Basic D&D. These are the builds for beginners (or people who like things very simple) and it should come as no surprise if it's not for you.

Wait for the PHB to judge things based on complexity of options.

Currently it looks like Pathfinder probably isn't going anywhere in my area as there is no hype whatsoever in my FLGS for 5th, not that it matters since i'll probably not be getting 5th based on what i've seen leaked.

Still, I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope one of my fellows at the table splurges for it so I can read the final version.

A lesson learnt during 4e is that plenty of gamers like their fighter boring - err, super simple. The warrior's there to make those people happy. For everyone else, there's the Battlemaster.

WOTC: "Some people like simple fighters, some like complex ones, so we're going to give you both. Here is an example of a simple fighter."

Internet Complainers: "Bah, I like complex fighters and this example is too simple! That's it, I am not buying the game!"

Same goes for those hardcore OSR gamers who wanted a fighter that was more simple. Oh well. Better a compromise than drawing 4e out for another 5 years.

I think "I want a fighter that is more simple than this, without action surges and second winds" is a fair argument, and I hope the DMG helps support that kind of play.

I do not think "I wanted a complex fighter, this is a simple fighter so that's it I am done!" is a fair argument, when they know there are two types and that the other one is the complex one, which will be in the book too.

Now if it turns out the complex fighter is still not complex enough for them, that might be a different issue. But, some people were complaining that the simple fighter was not complex enough, and that's just silly.

It's a fair arguement, but I think it's a little sad that everyone seems to assume that because THIS fighter has Action Surge and Second Wind, that they ALL must have it.

I guess the evidence is from the last playtest packet, but I would think there's at least a small chance that there are other options, just the person who built this pregen picked those options.
