So, who saw the premier of the new Battlestar Galactica?

As a fan of Sci-Fi who was hugely disappointed in the mini-series I have to say the first episode of the BSG ongoing is really well done. I don't know how they will sustain the story over a long arc but I greatly enjoyed watching this episode.

In fact it brought back a lot of memories of my time in the service because of the long hours and exhaustion points. Granted we never got that bad but I think everyone did a great job channelling that frustration, anger and even the giggle point of exhaustion.

One thing the original had was planetary episodes, with the last vestiges of humanity all on the run and no real alien influence to speak of so far I wonder if this won't turn out the way I always felt Voyager could have.. there are lasting consequences. The need to search out real resources between episodes will be huge. However I think they will have to diversify and introduce new forces in the universe aside from humans and cylons eventually and I still think the clones humanoid cylon idea is really dumb but maybe that will be explained.. heck even now we can randomly generate human features in hi-res computer simulations.. I see the lack of individuality as a potential achilles heel and so I'll let it go for now.

OK downloaded and watched the first episode. Generally my thoughts echo those already mentioned. So far it definitely looks like this one may live up to the promise.

I have a couple of minor nitpicks...

First of all they are really overdoing the shaky pan & scan camera shots. When they start becoming a distraction (and they are) there's a problem.

Second, how in the heck do you Brits deal with the annoying SKYONE logo perched at the top of the screen throughout the entire show?! I thought it was bad enough over here with everyone sticking their logo in corner of the screen, but SKYONE's cuts farther into the picture than I have ever seen before.

Finally...

I have a hard time buying a warship that isn't set up for multiple watches. In the real world if at least one watch isn't off duty getting a couple of hours rest, they would just be getting in the way of the folks on duty.

Heck even when we went into Kuwait we managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of sleep...

Minor quibbles aside the show was one of the better first episodes for a sci-fi series. My original skepticism is definitely wearing off.

I've never served in the military but it kinda makes sense as the entire human race is at stake. They needed all pilots, techs and officers working overtime just to stay ahead of the enemy. Add to it that they didn't exactly have proper time to prepare for the attacks and they may be short in many key areas.

A warship is accustomed to performing high intensity operations for extended periods of time. That is what the crew is trained for. Running constant air-ops for five days straight is nothing to the crew of an aircraft carrier (to use the closest terrestrial example).

In addition space is at such a premium on such a vessel that there are more personnel than work stations. The off-duty watch would have no place to work and would actually be in the way due to the space constraints.

Having all the watches running 24/7 is actually less efficent and would hamper crew performance rather than aid it.

As I mentioned it didn't ruin the show for me, just one of the little details that hurt my suspension of disbelief.

Keep in mind that in the mini-series, the Galactica was due for decomissioning. It was going to be a museum. One of the landing bays was a giftshop or somesuch.

When the Cylon attack happened, a major point was actually re-arming the ship from a supply depot in order to do what they could. Chances are, the were running with a skeleton crew, with a few stragglers picked up, like Apollo.

I'm assuming they simply don't have enough trained people for effective multiple watches. It would be interesting to see recruiting others to serve in that capacity become a plot point.

I'll also agree on that SkyOne logo. The brits certainly have my sympathy if you all have to put up with it always on screen on every show.

Well, its only fair.

...On the point of the SkyOne logo I have never had a problem with it, its totally unobtrusive...maybe if you haven't seen it before it might distract you somewhat but for us seasoned SkyOne campaigners you don't even notice it.
