Sonic Fireball and Silence

silence stopping sonic damage

ok so its not completely unprecidented, but it still seems powerull because not too many spells will stop all damage of an elemental type damage. thats why there are mage/priest spells of the first 3 levels and why rings of elemental resistance are so expensive.

it doesnt bother me that the silence spell stops sonic damage but rather that the spell dose so as a side effect, and that its only level 2.

Forget science and common sense for a minute. Why is this even a question? The last sentence of Silence is pretty clear.

"This spell provides a defense against sonic or language-based attacks, such as command , harpy song, a horn of blasting , et c. "

This sentence is not in the SRD. And I am angry with it

Oups, sorry for opening that can of worms.

I talked to my DM and we are handling it as NO sonic in silence. The only exception is a sonic fireball: the bead passing through a silence and exploding BEHIND the zone of silence is not affected. That's because it's just a bead and sonic is not "created" until the point of explosion. A cone of cold [sonic substituted] will not pass through a silence.

So I think it's conform with the sage and common sense.
Thank you all for your input and we all could hope for even clearer ruling in the new edition of the PHB.

Bye

PS: What the hell stands YMMV for ??? I'm to simple minded to figure it out by myself. :)

Thanks for pointing that out, Oni.

Yes, but if you want to be protected from the sonic attack you have to suffer the effects of silence so that offsets the benefits.
