Sonic Fireball and Silence

Re: Middle ground.

Until the rules revision and possible rewording of silence, I've decided to handle it similar to resist elements. (it's just damage type specific) Silence will absorb 12hps/round for the duration of the spell.

When you say "similar to" - are you treating it as Energy Resistance (ie does not stack with Resist, Endure, or Protection from Elements [Sonic]), or is it a separate effect (that does stack)?

Forget science and common sense for a minute. Why is this even a question? The last sentence of Silence is pretty clear.

"This spell provides a defense against sonic or language-based attacks, such as command , harpy song, a horn of blasting , et c. "

I could care less about how silence effects sonic fireballs, because the only reason I'd take sonic sub is so my evocations could actually damage inanimate objects, instead of being pathetic at it as they normally are. So for me yeah, sure go ahead make silence block it, it doesn't really weakne the feat for the purpose I would use it for.

I just noticed this thread.......as was just pointed out, silence specifically says it stops sonic-based attacks.....

On another question.......what would you rule happens if you detonate a sonic fireball in a cave? (we all know what happens if you create too much noise underground....). I thought about taking sonic substitution for this purpose alone.....(sonic fireball at the top of the cavern, teleport out, while the goblin army is at the bottom....)

silence

so a 2nd level spell stops all sonic damage? Am I the only one that seems a wee bit "broken" to? I like the idea of stoping 12/round. this give silence the same effect as normal but grants the added resist elements - sonic. that seems more in line to me with what a 2nd level spell is capable of.

sure it stops all of it, but if your using it to protect yourself then you can forget communication or spellcasting for the most part. Not only that sonic damage is pretty rare, in most cases by the time you know your up against it'll have already smacked you.
