In 4th Edition, we don't want to design classes for this sort of reason anymore; since every class is in effect a spellcaster, we don't want to see a 99% overlap of the power lists between two classes.

People will jump on that quote. Ever class is "in effect" a spellcaster. But I totally agree that we don't want to see lots of overlap in powers. I look forward to seeing a bard that is not just a gimp sorcercer/fighter/rogue.

I never looked at it as dragon bestiality... in that sense, it is pretty creepy. I always thought of it as a dragon assuming human form via alter self or something and impregnating a female, or more often, the result of some sort of pact, similar to what's seen in Dragonheart, and the power is just passed down the recipient's bloodline.

Aye.

It makes total sense for a dragon to do that to various humanoid tribes that worship it, in order to "Bless" them with magical spellcasters. Or to create super-soldiers (see the half-dragon troll).

I’m of two minds about this one.
On the one hand I find the concept of wild magic interesting and the sorcerer might as well be the new wild mage. I just hope it won't be just an elemental blaster like what was described in R&C.

On the other hand, some class should take on the 3e sorcerer’s “role”. That is an intuitive, non-vancian, non-bookish (or wandish, or any silly implement and school) spellcaster who can be a blaster but doesn’t have to.
I didn't care much for the dragon bloodline thing but it never bothered me because it was just an unobtrusive hint and could be decided by players on an individual basis without affecting the game world.

When the designers would go on and on about how the sorcerer would be redundant once we have both the warlock and a non-vancian wizard, I thought it made sense...
…and then I saw the ddx characters.

The wizard is still Vancian. Actually, even martial classes are kind of Vancian in 4e, but the wizard is worse because he still has to prepare his dailies in advance.

And I hate the warlock’s “otherworldly patrons” thing, that would better fit divine casters. But that’s just fluff.
Mechanically, the warlock seems all about wargamey movements and the fey pact is one of the most nonsensical powers I’ve seen: “you off someone so bamf, you teleport!” wtf?

So neither the new wizard nor the warlock compares to the old sorcerer as far as I’m concerned.

Every class is also a fighter (extra feats), a cleric (healing) and a rogue (skills). :)
[Ahmahd is given the Sorcerer outline]
Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan: I cannot specialize this.
Herger the Joyous: Design better.

With a bit of luck, the sorcerer will steal the snot from psions, leaving psionics snot-free.
You know, after reading The Dresden Files, I'm okay with snot.

Because in there, everything in the spirit world is made of snot. And when it comes into the material world, it has to form its body out of snot, in order to have a physical form.

So that's how I'd handle any type of summoning. Not just psions.

The context was the 3e spell lists taking up most of the room, and wanting more than one class to use each spell.... iirc.

That said, since all classes get a relatively equal share of the room in the PH for their powers, all classes are casters.
