Stiking through cover
The example given really was just to show what I was asking for in that question. There are plenty of places where attacking with reach would be very efficient even when attacking through a friendly target. Say you have the same setup as in the original post, but all of those figures are in a 5' way hallway. Now the rogue not only gets to attack the monster but can Sneak attack as well since the monster is flanked. The rogue could also stand behind the Tank at the top of a T intersection with the Tank protectnig the Rogue. Being able to strike a creature from the second rank can be used in a lot of situations. In the example above, I'm not arguing that if the monster wanted to get to the rogue he couldn't. You are correct in that he would only have to take a 5 foot step and get a full round attack on him. If you were playing the monster smartly he would move from that position anyways.
Again, I just wanted to make sure I could do the two things I asked for above as I'm making a 4th level Fighter/Rogue for a game I'm starting and wanted to have a "Spiked Chain" / Dual wielding rogue, something I've never played with before.
Thanks

My point was, there are many places he could use his reach weapon from without his ally giving the opponent cover, or the opponent being adjacent. The situation as presented seems to be that the Rogue will have a reduced chance to hit, while if the monster is interested in the Rogue, it merely takes a 5 foot step before hitting them...Just a thought. Being behind a friend is really only a good thing when the monster is attacking, not the Rogue. Give it a shot, though, I suppose. Could well be smarter, I don't know- just chipping in.
