Spot a Class skill

I have currently ran d20 with Spot being a class skill. I am beginning to question my decision on this. I am starting a new campaign up and thinking of putting it back to the way it is in the PHB. I am just curious some other people's idea on this subject. Back in 1st and 2nd edition I always used a perception based stat, in d20 that is spot. But, I have found with everyone having spot, everyone is always maxing that skill out. Just wanted some suggestions. Thanks.

Leave spot how it is. It really is a strength of r certain clkasses who have this as a class skill. Same with listen and search. IMC those are the three msot useful skills. Having spot and listen as crosss class skills for most people aslo improves the power of alertness.

So do you mean to allow any character to pick it up as a class skill or leave it as it is in the book?

everyone is always maxing it out? make listen a class skill too. seems like your players have too many skill points to go around. that or they're too preoccupied with their numbers. in one of hte games i play, they're both class skills for everyone, and of course most people put a few ranks in it often to make up for wisdom deficencies or to do something crazy like get better at it. but most people usually have lots of other skills to worry about.

seriously tho, try adding listen to the mix for one game and see what happens. or, here's a thought: make it become a class skill after a character buys 4 or 5 cross class ranks. if someone is that dedicated to a skill, class or not, then they should learn enuff about it or get used to doing it enuff, for it to become a class skill. whaddaya think?

That's truly a good point. NegZ, i totally agree with you and the idea could be a great house rule. Of course it can't be exactly ruled, in the way we argue daily on tables and balance. But it leaves a good type of discrection to DMs... fantastic!

Hmm. I would probably change it back to the original rules. There is no problem with multiclassing or buying cross class ranks if you really want to have a certain skill. Or taking the Alertness Feat. (Maybe allow to take it a second time, or an "improved" version of it...)
Barbarians/ Fighters choice would be Ranger or Rogue.
Wizards fare well with some cross class skills.
Clerics, Druids and Paladins have a decent Wisdom score, so no problems there. (And Druids might consider multiclassing to Ranger)
Sorcers could take the Alertness Feat or multiclassing with Rogue.
Bards multiclass with Rogue (this can be a powerful combination)
I think the greatest problems are with the sorcerer. To me, he seems a bit ... boring ... in his spell and skill selection.
