Star Wars Galaxies

I'm a human medic named Air-Ick No-ha or something stupid like that. I completed my first fed-ex mission -- woo hoo! I haven't found anyone who needs healing yet.

From everything I've heard, it doesn't sound like there's much depth to the game--not much to do beyond the standard grind of doing whatever it is your character is specialized at doing.

I figure I'll be a scout. I always love taking in the sights in MMORPG, and I hope I can do that without having to be a combat god. Maybe try smuggler eventually (if you can't tell, I love skill-oriented rogue types). I have to wonder if the eventual inclusion of mounts and vehicles won't make the role of wilderness explorer obsolete in worlds that consist of only 15x15 km squares.

I think the game will improve once I find some people to hang out with. I'm now also playing a rodian marksman and I have to say i suck at combat. The missions assigned to me just get me killed. Oh well. I might experiment with some of the other classes and see if there's one I really enjoy.

I talked with the peole at SOE about "game time cards" for SW:G. That is the only way I can play since I do not have a credit card. They said the George Lucas Himself does not want them to put out game time cards. Thats a smart move, keep people from playing/ buying the game and not make as much money for you.

Thats odd, as when you install Star Wars Galaxies and sign up for your account one of the payment options is "game time card". Doesn't make much sense that they wouldn't eventually have game time cards like they do for EQ.

Spent a few hours playing an artisan, going around prospecting for chemicals and minerals and making weapons. I need to figure out how to make other things though -- there's a glut of weapons on the market right now. I did spend like 30 minutes just running across the countryside from one city to another on Naboo (too cheap to take a shuttle). For this character, combat is to be avoided at all costs.

Some tips

I put together a small list of tips that might help people get more out of SWG while they're still in their 'newbie' phase. One of the key things is generalization at first, specialization later. Anyway, you can see my top 10 at my site.

It really has been cool, though, and the more I play, the cooler it gets. People are working together really well on the servers I have tried and are able to pull off a lot of neat stunts (the tusken raider attacks on Lowca were pretty wild).

Haven't been able to find a copy of the game locally (didn't try that hard), but from reading the various guides, it does indeed sound like a scout is just another combat character who wanders around the woods exterminating the fauna. Every guide I've seen advises the scout to take up the marksman profession (or even to start in it). That's disappointing. Time to re-evaluate my options...

Most early scout skills come from building traps, field dressing animals, and building camps for others. While it is much easier to work with more martial characters (skinning their kills or just setting up campsites near hunting grounds), you don't have to take Marksman as a scout if you're willing to tough it out.

From what I've seen, the diversity of character types has been pretty staggering.

Not for everyone, but a far cry from 'I'm a guy who kills monsters.'

I have been playing as well. I agree with the diversity. My current favorite is a human female entertainer/brawler who is very into her fashion. She buys, sells ,and trades a lot as you suggest on your site Sam.

She started on Tatooine and I am honestly having a blast. SHe hooked up with a group of other entertainers so I am advancing quickly in that area. My goal is to visit Jabba's Palace as a Dancer at some point. Ultimately I want her to become an Dancer/ Taras Kasia (sp?) Martial Artist with some scouting and gunplay ability. I found out where the Rebels hangout and am just waiting for the right time to "chose as side" and become the undercover rebel entertainer who is a fairly good killer of imperials and the like.

I can't stress enough about tips for the entertainers. They are critical to the healing of many characters and not that many tip. The only other reason to stay up on that stage for hours is to get better in order to learn new songs, dances and instruments but when you need to be out killing it is the tips that keep ya in the cantina, not the skill advancement. For my character, the tips certainly help with the wardrobe!

I was also amazed at the level of visual customization to characters. It is pretty amazing. There are few characters that look alike and add to that the many, many different types of clothes and armor and it really does start to look like a scene from the movies after a while.

Something that is very, very valuable to groups is an entertainer/ Medic/ Scout. I am not going to go that route but they would be highly prized in a party. The can make camp and heal all wounds, both mental and physical.

All in all, a great game. One of the things I like most is the lack of level dependence (that's right, no character levels). I hated it when I went away for a while, lets say in Dark Age of Camelot or EQ and came back only to have my steadfast adventuring group 10 levels ahead of me where I can no longer adventure with them. In Galaxies its not that big a deal. They might have gained much more skill than I during the time away but there is no penalty for sticking with them and with the cool ability for players to teach players (and even be rewarded for it) the lack of experience is not that big a set back.

If you like Star Wars and you like massive multiplayer games you SHOULD enjoy Star Wars Galaxies. I can't wait to become a rebel.
