(Star Wars) Question about Palpatine

Nebuchadnezzar

First Post
How did Palpatine (Darth Sidious, the Emperor etc) get his powers? He appears to be both extremely powerful and intelligent. As one of the most potent force-using creatures in the SW universe, I'd really like to know how he became a sith lord. I know this is not covered in the movies, so I accept any other sources of canon-material (novells, comics, etc).

I don't think anything has covered how he came to be trained as a sith lord. I would imagine he found a sith holocron at some point in his past and learned from that. Just a total guess on my part.

Perhaps he was found and trained by another Sith Lord himself.

IN his write ups for the RPG (in the first core book and a SWGamer article), it mentions he was friends with a Jedi master (Jorus C'baoth in the Gamer article). Maybe he was secretly a sith.

It would pretty much have to be a Sith who taught him because of the rule of two.

Watch it there... According to Lucas the only works "canonized" have been the movies, their novelizations (only the novels based on the movies), and their radio drama adaptations.

Anything else is either Expanded Universe Continuity. Which it may have happened in the Star Wars universe, but must remain consistant with all EU material published before hand... that's includes all novels, comic book, reference books, and roleplaying materials.

Or, it falls into the catagory of "Infinities", in which the publication most likely takes place in an "alternate" Star Wars universe.

All that aside, I haven't found anything that speaks of Palpatine's origins.

I think he comes from a line of Sith Lords, by blood. Makes the most sense to me.

After all, we know that Jedi potential tends to run in families (this was true, even before that midichlorian junk). We also know the Jedi tend to test children for that.

So if he was just had strong Force potential on a civilized world (he made Supreme Chancellor - he probably isn't from too far from Coruscant) - the odds are much better that he would've ended up with the Jedi, not stumbling across a Sith Holocron. Plus, I think it would've been hard for him to hide his training from the Jedi council, if he didn't have a real mentor.

Nah. I'm guessing Papa Palpy was also Sith, and the one before him, and that Palpatine has some trouble siring kids of his own, or he wouldn't need to outsource.

As for Jorus C'Baoth...in the EU continuity, I'm pretty sure Palpatine had the original killed. He did have a Dark Side corrupted clone of the guy guarding something important, though.

Jorus was a friend of young Palpatine, of sorts... Palpy sent him and several other Jedi off on a hair-brained mission to explore past the edges of the galaxy. Jorus and company were never heard from again, and presumed dead, I believe.

In Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Series, Joruus C'Baoth was a deranged Darkside clone of Jorus. He lived on the planet Wayland, and guarded Mount Tantiss, an underground fortress that contained all off the Emperor's super-secret goodies... Like outlawed cloning tanks, and other superweapon blueprints and prototypes.

Yeah, that was it. I'd forgotten about them being friends - I just assumed he had someone cut the brakes in their ship so the Jorus clone wouldn't go crazy. Well, crazier.

Hrm. All the more reason Jorus wouldn't be a logical theoretical mentor - can't see a Sith Lord wanting to go to the edge of the galaxy, cooped up with a bunch of Jedi, while his apprentice takes over the government. :)

(Well, unless he knew about the NJO stuff that was going to happen, and wanted to retire in peace, I guess. :) )
