STARGATE UNIVERSE #8:Time/Season 1/2009

The next episode teaser doesn't seem to be a continuation of this ep at all, so I'm guessing they followed Lt. Scott #2's advice.

I was halfway expecting Eli to come up with that plan, to save Chloe. But having Scott as last survivor both times was appropriate. I wonder if the next iteration found both time travelling kinos?

I was not a fan of this episode's ending. I prefer resolution to being left out to dry. I know we can assume that Scott's final message was heeded by the crew, but why not show it?

That said, the episode did serve as a nice bit of character development. The conversations Eli had with the others while on the planet made for some good glimpses into the characters' motivations.

I just don't care for time travel as a plot device. It really seems to be the last resort of the struggling sci-fi writer. I don't mind shifts back and forth along the same timeline as a storytelling device, but the overuse of time travel in the Star Trek shows just burned me out on the concept.

As a bio-geek, I was thrilled with the solution to the sickness being venom. There's a fairly large area of research in using various toxins for medical use. It was more than a bit of a hand-wave, but one that it at least based on actual research.

On the biology theme, the fruit scene was well done. You really don't know how your body will react until you try something. I mean, you could do complex chemical analysis on the fruit to rule out any significant toxins. It's easier just to try it though, especially with the medic right there.

I was thrilled Chloe died not once, but twice. I also appreciated the line in the beginning about her wanting to be useful. I still think it's too little, and definitely later than it should have been. Ah well, at least it got mentioned at all.

Eli and TJ had some decent chemistry in the scenes they shared. They should write the two of them more scenes together.

I am fairly disappointed that time-travel was used as a magic reset button. There was a lot of great stuff in the episode that used time-travel to move the characters forward. TJ's breakdown, Eli's speech about friendship, Greer's perception of himself as a failure, all of that would have been great to move forward with. Instead, none of it really mattered for the characters. I think the better ending for the episode would have been for them to get the creatures, and have the "dead" characters in a deep coma. Then you get all the characterization and character movement, without the cheap reset.

Overall though, for the most part I enjoyed this episode. Certainly I enjoyed it more than last week's. I think SGU does better when they're not
trying to address ethical questions, and just telling stories.

I totally dug the episode, and quite enjoyed both the specific use of time travel as well as how they ended it. For me, I appreciate a show willing to let us follow through to the logical conclusion rather than always having to show it.

I agree. I think this was an excellent episode, perhaps the best yet. I thought the double time travel plot was clever and, while surprised, enjoyed the ending not rehashing visit to Planet Death #3.

And, the episode scared the crap out of me!!! Alien monsters that just eat a hole right through you!?!?! Aaaaaggghhhhh!!!! :)

It was also kinda funny how Eli called it. "What are you doing? Haven't you seen Aliens?!?!?" :)

The sad part about this episode is that the revelations about each other that would humanize them to each other were lost in the time loop. Eli's talk to TJ about his mother, Rush's movie quote, and Greer's teaching Eli how to shoot...the Kino from the first loop never made it through to the third.

One, hate time loops, they are a cop out. Here you had great character growth and interaction and poof it is gone, to be aired in another episode.

Two, plot was contrived; we got bug from the water from the last stop but we don't know that because we are on another planet now. Bug on this planet can save us. All is okay because we are doing the time warp.

There WAS some great moments in this one, great dialog: Most notibly, Eli and TJ, Eli and Rush, and Eli and dead Chloe.

And what is up with the Chloe hate?
