I think that rolling, unless it is something along the lines of roll 3d6, in order, and take what you get, usually ends up with something very close to or exactly like a point buy - only it takes a lot of die rolling, shifting around, rerolls, and even DM fiddling before you get to what is exactly the same result.
Mmmm. No. Sure, I might fidget to get the numbers where I want them. But once I am there, I am golden.
Were I to use point buy, the players IME would fidget and obsess about the points every time the have to make a character.
IOW, the way I see it, the "fidget cost" of random is a one time cost, but the "fidget cost" of point buy is per-character.
IMO/E. YMMV. Natch. I am not about saying my way is the one true way. But I certainly don't think yours is the one true way either. So consider this a rebuttal of your case for the one try way that a statement of mine.
