Stupid, blind, and dead deer...

Treebore

First Post
Driving down the night time highway at a steady 65 MPH (legal speed limit), momentary glimpse of deer, with horns, jumping into lane to my left. Slam on breaks.

BAAAMMM!!!

Headlights gone.
Grill gone.
Front left quarter panel curled and pushed back.
Left blinker gone.
Bumper seriously bent.

Driver (me) and passenger (daughter, Titania) are fine.

Deer, dead. Very dead. One horn missing and gelatinous looking rib cage area kind of dead.

Funny moment.

Still breaking the car to a stop, notice deer sliding along highway, keeping up with me for a second or two until it stops sliding.

Good news.

We weren't hurt, radiator is intact. Engine runs fine. Van will be driveable, in day time, once I bang the quarter panel a little further forward so it doesn't rub on the tire when I make right hand turns. Left turn and straight ahead is fine.
I know this because officer was cool enough to drive us home leading the way, since our head lights were gone.

Tomorrow I call insurance company and find out what they say.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Velocity is the mother of venison.

Good luck with the repairs- from what I understand, most inscos will cover something like that.

I was in Arizona a few months ago with some friends, and we were constantly amazed by the number of deer standing and strolling around on or along the roads, just assuming that the cars would stop for them. I thought that fear of anything big and loud was a natural part of a creature's instincts?

Actually, I was in a rural part of the Netherlands last weekend, and the hikers and cyclists showed a very similar disregard for hazards of busy roads.

Good luck on the insurance claim.

Glad you and your daughter are okay.

USAA is my insurance company, I've been pleased with them for over 15 years now.

Yeah, the worst of our injuries is my neck hurts a little bit. Presumably minor whiplash. My daughter says she feels fine. So the most pain I'll likely suffer is from paying my deductible.

Oy... Deercrashes can be quite nasty. Lucky you two came out unharmed. Hope the fixing of the car won't become too costly.
