Swapping Warlock Invocations...

The text is kind of unclear about this. Does a Warlock get to swap out invocations at any time they get a new invocation, or when they get a new upgrade of invocations (once when they learn lesser, then greater, then dark)?

The wording is faulty and can be taken either way.

IMO the relevant part is "At any level when the warlock learns a new invocation, he can also replace an invocation he already knows with another invocation of the same or a lower grade."
The rest of the paragraph (the lengthy, redundant explanation) refers to the last part of the sentence but, as you said, isn't written very well.

Considering the way the examples are presented, I'd hazard that the rule is intended to allow warlocks to swap out invocations only when they are getting a new "upgrade" (to use RigaMortus' phrase) of invocation, i.e. at 6th, 11th and 16th lvl only. But, as written, the warlock is able to swap invocations at any level when he gains a new one.

I generally give examples less weight than the rest of the text, but I think "at upgrades only" might make sense.

As much as I'd hate to admit it, I think this is correct. If it follows the same pattern as the Sorcerer and Bard (which can only swap out spells anytime they get a new spell level) then this makes sense.

I agree the Warlock isnt written well / designed the same very chaotic in structure

I had the same problem when first reading it, the info ist cut and dry. Basically leaving room for our group to debate...

I think it boils down to the listing in the table of warlock stuff. At the entries at 6th, 11th, and 16th levels of Warlock it lists "new invocation", but not at other levels. So "new invocation" seems to mean "new type or level of invocations". With that meaning, the text on the preceding page saying the warlock can switch out "when she gets a new invocation" seems to be something that only can happen at 6th, 11th and 16th levels.

I admit it is a rather non-standard definition of the phrase "new invocation" but it gives a non-contradictory reading of the rules as written.
