Yes. It would be wonderful if everything in the world came for free, but we don't yet live in a post-scarcity society, so stuff has to be paid for.

Ads or paid subscription, take your pick.

I suppose you could have patronage, but I doubt that would work on the scale needed.

I've been on bluesky for a year now

But I didn't officially delete my X account until a week or so ago. I have no regrets. Especially since most people on X are now on Bluesky
I wouldn't delete an account... you never know when twitter will allow someone to retake the handle...

Facebook is really doubling down on the "you don't follow this stuff, you never asked for this stuff, but we're filling your timelines on all of our apps with the crap we want to show you" approach. I basically only use Facebook to communicate with the old fogies in my life (some of whom are my same age).
Facebook Messenger is the main way how I communicate with my friends and family back in the United States. Barely anyone here in Germany or Austria uses it. Here's it's mainly (also Meta-owned) WhatsApp. I think that I would prefer if people in the US used WhatsApp, but it is what it is.

I also quit Twitter when Musk bought it. While BlueSky sounds promising, I think that I may wait.

From what I understand, that's why a number of people haven't deleted theirs.
I am still on Twitter but barely post. I also feel it was pretty awful before and after Elon (just awful in Different ways). I kind of miss the early days when it could be a pretty friendly place

Yeah, I'm a former verified blue check person with thousands of followers on my professional account still. It would be a bad idea, in multiple ways, to let that handle be up for grabs.

I do not get targeted by the worst of modern Twitter the way women or POC or LGBT or especially trans folks do, but it ain't great.

At worst, I will just lock my account. At the moment, I still put in a bare minimum of a presence there, since I occasionally do get work DMs there and need to keep an eye on things.

But man, Bluesky is so much better, even if you aren't engaged in political discourse and just want to discuss comic books and RPGs without trolls screaming at you and the people you're speaking with all the time.

It's a text-first social media network of the type that used to be called "microblogging."

You can make posts of up to 300 words and daisy-chain them together in threads, with one post connected to another in order -- an artifact of this being a Twitter clone initially.

By default, it's a public platform where you don't need to know other people to see their posts or interact with them.

That all means that it's the kind of format that clicks with journalists, writers of all sorts (Gail Simone is one of the most popular and prolific posters there, for instance), comedians and more.

You can also just ogle it without creating an account, so there's no need to create an account if you don't want to: Bluesky
