Sighing Valley
Day 4 (Before Dawn) Early Morning

Thanks to Errol's sharp ears the group manage to detect the camp in time to skirt around it. Following the river as it turns west, you come across an unusual rock formation. Savra called it the howling plateaux, it is a mesa that straddles the river. According to Savra's directions the fastest way to the gulley is to cross the river here and head due north.

You have a choice to either climb the steep sides of the mesa or wade through the fast flowing river.

GM: Either choice will be an athletics check DC10. Failing the climb will result in a fall for up to 3d6 damage (depending on how badly you fail the test). Failing the wade check may result in you being washed down river (towards the gnoll camp) and possibly losing equipment.

Also in preparation for the next part can you give me a perception roll.

Duran eyes up the mesa then shifts his gaze to the river he did not relish either prospect, if only he had the strength in him to shift forms....
"Has anyone got any climbing equipment? I don't fancy getting wet."

OOC: here's that perception roll[roll0]

GM: forgot to mention that creativity can get advantage on either roll.

The climb will also take slightly longer.

Ilvellios rummages around in his backpack, "Yes, I have some here,"

He pulls out a hammer, pitons and rope. "I agree about climbing instead of swimming, and from the vantage point we will get better visibility of the region."

Errol nodded to Ilvellios’ advice and the group bypassed the gnolls unawares. They came to the outcropping and river they needed to cross.

“I have a climbing kit, as well,” Errol told the others. They started to set the equipment and then climb over.

Sighing Valley
Day 4, Early morning (first light)

The group pulled out some climbing equipment and proceeded to climb the steep side of The Howling Plateaux. Both Duran and Illvelious lost their footing more than once, but were saved from injury by the ropes and pitons that the group carried. Climbing down the other side the group start to become aware of how close to dawn it is.

Heading due north across the barren valley floor you loose all landmarks to the foggy gloom. Just as the dark fog starts to lighten in the pre dawn light a huge cliff face looms ahead - you must have drifted eastward as you walked through the fog and have come upon the eastern cliff of the valley.

You don't think you are too far from the shelter offered by the gulley and the foliage there, but neither do you think you'll make it before dawn and fog lifts.

GM: You have a choice here again. If you continue on a quick pace you doubt you will get to somewhere you can hide before dawn, so you risk being spotted by the spire. If you force march, you should make it to somewhere you can hide but you'll need to make a DC 10 Athletics check again or suffer a level of exhaustion.

I've done Duran's climb check. Since you have climbing stuff, you won't take damage if you fall, but the two failed checks result in some delay.
Duran Athletics: 1D20 = [8] = 8

EDIT: forgot to mention that the athletics check is CON based, rather than STR

OOC: Sorry bout that was waiting to see if we got adv etc.

"Dawn approaches quickly, the look out will spot us for sure, by this point though I fear our treachery has all ready come to light and hiding would just delay the inevitable. I think we should get back on course and press on."

OOC: Navigation [roll0]. So I totally forgot Duran had a dog shame on me! Did it make it up the cliff?

"We've tried to avoid getting spotted so far, no point in stopping now just because we went a little off course!"

Ilvellios was a little concerned for the older man, but mastery over his body was the key tenet the monks had taught him in the monastery, and he knew that if he persevered now then his body would get stronger and more capable.

OOC:

Were we meeting up with JV and someone else at some point?

[roll0]

I realise moving fast isn't the same as having the endurance to travel long distances, but in this case, we are trying to cover a certain distance quicker than normal pace. Wouldn't his Monk's speed (45 instead of 30) mean that a forced march for others is just normal speed for him?

Edit: #%@! I really hope you're swayed by that argument, or at least give him advantage! :-D
