Yeah, you have basically arrived at the gulley but have to deal with the sentry before going further. There is a certain level of safety as well so it does appear to be a good place for a rest.
Although you have left an enemy behind you, as it were, you are out of immediate danger from the spire. It's obvious that they won't see you from the spire unless you head back in to the barren valley, so start a big fire, or something else crazy.
You are sort of at a chapter break, so it would be the best time for CharwomanGene and Trogdor1992 to join back in. I know CharwomanGene has some family issues, so might not be available right now and Trogdor seems to have gone quite - prison again? If you guys reach a decision about resting for an hour, eight hours or until sunset before either of them reply, I'll continue anyway.
Exhausted from the hurried trek across the valley the party spend some time recovering in the safety of the foliage at the entrance to the gulley. Some of them sleeping on the ground where they stop. They take it in turns to keep watch and Nariah, bored of guarding the camp the last few days, expresses her interest in getting more involved. Perhaps her interest is peaked by the mention of Windharrow. During your time on watch you can see occasional patrols leave and return to the Spire. Some of them sweep the valley but others are searching other parts of the countryside. As the sun warms the valley floor the wind picks up and you can hear why the valley has it’s name as the wind whistles over along the cliffs.
After some sleep and food the party head off towards the camp they can see in the gulley. Approaching openly they hear a whistle while about 200 yards from the camp, this sets off some activity, presumably the guards standing to, but the cover around the camp makes it hard to see exactly.
Nothing else happens until you are around 120 yards away from the camp, when a voice shouts out, “That’s far enough! What ya want?”
GM:
From your observations of the camp while resting you believe there are three in the camp itself and one more in the sentry post. You are not sure exactly where the sentry post is, but it is around 20 yards from where you are. You can make a perception check with advantage to see it. The camp itself is about 100 yards farther, if you want to see where the occupants are you will have to make a separate perception check without advantage this time.
I've allowed for a long rest, though I don't think that anyone has lost HP yet.
