When they reached the river fort that loomed above the river Errol asked of Pike, “What is that?”

“That be Riverguard keep, the bane of pirates and brigands. The Rivermaid be based there along with the Gold Digger, we keeps the river safe for traders.”

He continues his laugh for a few seconds then says in a calmer tone, "We'd stop der if'n it weren't fer ya lot, but payin passengers is easy money.

He wondered just how voluntary the payment of protection was, and just who was being protected from whom.

In spite of his troubled thoughts, the peaceful sights of the riverside slowly passing by gave him the chance to stop and appreciate the respite from traveling on foot.
