Tennant to Quit as Dr Who

It would be REALLy weird if, after he'd been established for a couple of years as the Doctor, you caught a rerun of that episode. It'd be like seeing a rerun of an Eccleston episode and seeing Tennant as a supporting actor.
Colin Baker appeared in a Doctor Who storyline during Peter Davison's run. Baker's character shot the Doctor. So there is precedent for casting an actor who has been on the show already.

Edit: Of course Freema Agyeman appeared as another character in the Cybermen episodes before being cast as Martha Jones. Lalla Ward was also on the show before being cast as the second Romana, and the show even acknowledged that Romana chose that character's form when she regenerated. B-)

There was also Gwen Cooper from Torchwood who appeared in Season 1 of Doctor Who (Ep. 3, I think), and then later as Gwen. I think the doctor once asked her if she was an old family in Cardiff, hinting at the family resemblance.

I've no idea how much truth there is to this, but:

Colin Solomon | Doctor Who | David Tenant | Black James Bond | Barack Obama

London (ANI): After Daniel Craig backed the idea of a black James Bond following Barack Obama's win, BBC bosses are in talks with Hollywood actor Colin Salmon to be cast as the first black Doctor Who.
Colin, who has appeared in Bond flicks earlier as M's assistant in three 007 flicks, will replace David Tenant in Doctor Who."He made a good impression when he appeared and bosses think the time is right to have the first black Doctor," The Sun quoted BBC spokesman, as saying.
Colin was earlier tipped as the next Bond before it went to Daniel Craig. Craig, who was himself the target of much criticism for being the first 'blonde Bond', humoured the idea of a black 007 at a press conference before the Italian premier of his latest Bond film Quantum of Solace.

"After Barack Obama's victory I think we might have reached the moment for a coloured 007," he told Agi news agency. "I think the role could easily be played by a black actor, because the character created by Ian Fleming in the Fifties has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated," Craig added.

BBC bosses are in talks to sign actor Colin Salmon to be the first black Doctor Who.

They want the James Bond star to take over when David Tennant, 37, leaves in 2009.

Colin, 45, appeared as character Dr Moon this year — but is best known as M’s assistant in three 007 films. He was tipped to land the Bond role before it went to Daniel Craig.

A BBC source said: “He made a good impression when he appeared and bosses think the time is right to have the first black Doctor.”

Presenter Terry Wogan has reported on his radio show that the next Doctor might be announced in this year's Children In Need show. Although nothing has appeared officially to confirm this, Wired suggests that such an announcement would be a good fund-raiser for the event.

David Tennant appeared on BBC's Breakfast on Monday, and during the interview indicated that he wouldn't rule out returning to the show at some point in the future. He also mentioned that Steven Moffat's appointment had almost swayed his decision to leave (something that he and Russell T Davies had agreed upon some months previously). On the inevitable subject of a good female contender for the role, he lightly suggested his former co-star Billie Piper.

Based on the interview, Den of Geek speculated on how he might return to the role, whilst the South Wales Echo concentrated on the Piper connection - also noting that the odds from William Hill on a female Doctor had now been lowered from 20/1 to 12/1 after the interview. Meanwhile, Lucy Mangan of the Guardian commented on her husband's view of a female in the part and why she thinks it would be a good move for the show. (Other stories related to the Breakfast interview from BBC News, Reuters, Press Association, Wales Online, Telegraph, Daily Mail, Now, Melbourne Herald)

Meanwhile, speculation on who would take up the mantle continues apace in the media!

Back in 1999, DWM ran an article in which well-known fans at the time commented on how they'd like to see the Doctor return. One of those was new head writer Steven Moffat, in which he suggested an older actor for the role, a "grandfather" figure. In spite of a decade between this and the production of Moffat's series next year, this hasn't stopped The Sun from revitalising these anecdotes! (Story also taken up by MyPark Magazine and BBC America's Anglophenia)

The Mirror reports that ex-EastEnders actor Tom Ellis is under consideration - Ellis was previously seen in the series as Tom Milligan in Last Of The Time Lords. (Story also taken up by RTE and Now)

Additional news on Tennant leaving and speculation on casting can be found in: Evening Post, Wales on Sunday, io9, Guardian. Update: Raising Kids, Den of Geek.

I dunno. He's a bit straight-laced and sober. Can he do eccentric?

Well, I haven't seen him do "eccentric," but I've seen him do other than straight-laced. (Despite the military demeanor, for instance, I wouldn't call his part in Resident Evil straight-laced.)

I could be wrong, obviously; maybe he's wrong for the part. But I like the guy, and I've never seen a bad performance from him, so I'm eager to give him a shot.

(And of course, some Doctors are more eccentric than others. I agree he shouldn't be straight-laced, but he needn't be as whacky as Tennant or as exuberant as Eccleston to make it work--though I'd love to see him try.)

OTOH, perhaps in addition to being the first black Dr Who, he'll play the first top-to-bottom, stick-up-the-backside, condescending jerk Dr Who, in which case a penchant or skill for playing the straight-laced and regimented type would be a definite asset.

You know...a Dr we'd all love to hate, like JR on Dallas.

Or if you're watching a rerun of an episode where Billie Piper is the companion, and seeing Freema Agyeman in a supporting role.

Oh, wait...
