OTOH, perhaps in addition to being the first black Dr Who, he'll play the first top-to-bottom, stick-up-the-backside, condescending jerk Dr Who, in which case a penchant or skill for playing the straight-laced and regimented type would be a definite asset.

You know...a Dr we'd all love to hate, like JR on Dallas.
Like Plane said, you really gotta check out the Sixth Doctor. The viewers didn't love to hate him. They just hated him.

Having said that, such characters can be pulled off, as Laurie has obviously demonstrated. I think Colin Baker's problem was that he often didn't even seem particularly clever. If you're gonna be a jerk, you better bring something really strong to the table.

As rumor are saying the guy that played the Master is coming back...I am putting my money that HE will be the new Dr Who! :D

He says "I'm the Master, not the Doctor. I don't want to be the Doctor. If I ever come back, it will be as the Master".

I'm pretty sure it is the "or are they tricking us."

If you look closely (hard on the little YouTube video, but much clearer on TV) you can see that Morrissey's sonic screwdriver is, in fact, a normal screwdriver. And, of course, the "Cyberman" is a chimp with a Cyberman helmet on.

I thought Tennant brought a lot unlikable traits in his portrayal of the Doctor, especially during Season 4. Shall we begin with his holier than thou treatment of the new UNIT during the Sontaran two parter? I probably lost count of how many times I wanted to smack his arrogant arse there. Then there's the cold shoulder he gives to his 'daughter' Jenny. Fortunately Donna is there to point out his blatant hypocrisy.

But it's all good come Midnight, when the Doctor's smart mouth and hubris nearly prove to be his undoing. So by episode's end he neither elated nor relieved, but humbled. Never has the character deserved such a comeuppance.

Make no mistake, I enjoyed Tennant's stint as the Doctor, despite all this.
