D&D 4E The 4e Mystery Race is going to be...

I would really like to find out that it was the skarn, from Magic of Incarnum, but you and I both know that it will never happen. I would also like the secret race to be the shadar-kai, who fit right in with the shadowfell, or the shifter, but I think they'll both be in the monster manual instead.

My money is on something dragon-related. If it was just the orc, I would be incredibly disappointed.

Lets listen to this:

1) In Chris Perkins campaign the mystery race has a negative konnotation, but the PCs overlook it in favor of the shared goals.

2) Peter Schaefer talks about a Goblin Ranger, that is on the PCs side.

3) Michelle Carter tells us the class of the mystery race in Chris Perkins campaign is ranger.

1 + 2 + 3 = Goblin

Let's see what we will get. I'd prefer other races added to the PHB but...not my descision.

He's correct in that there is such a conspiracy theory. It's, ahem, silly at best, but it exists.

He may have been scoffing at the claim that there are a "frighteningly large number of people" who believe it.

Then again, IMO if even one person believes it, that's a frighteningly large figure. :)

Say it with me now...

Ok, Goliaths.
In 4E, YOU can play a Gelatinous Cube. Hence the push to get a cube (with functioning "engulf-function" into the first 4E-compatible set!

Cheers, LT.

If I had to guess, I would say something exotic, such as the Dragonborn. I haven't been impressed with any of the races introduced in the 'Races of' books, but if done right, it could work well enough. Given the tendency for somewhat goofy names so far, I wouldn't be very surprised to see the Goliaths. In any case, I would expect a race that works well for brutish roles.
If the popular guess, Orcs, turns out to be true, that's one more thing I'm not going to have to change, as in my game I've already dropped Half-Orcs in favor of full-blooded Orcs.

cheers

Which to me is a great argument for why it is NOT going to be Goblins. In every other situation where someone has played a [mystery race], they very specifically didn't say what it was. I'm pretty sure the Goblin Ranger was a playtest of the MM1-Monsters-as-PC's rules.

Of the OP's suggested races, Minotaur is (by far) my first and favorite choice. I don't think it's likely though.

Orc isn't unreasonable. I'd hate it and not allow it IMC (no, I do not play in Eberron), but I can see them doing it.

Either Shifter or Changeling would be cool and acceptable to me, but I think they're staying Ebberon-only. They're also not big/strong, which is missing right now; nor are they fierce. I rate it unlikely.

The idea of the Dragonspawn might be interesting. They were mentioned in a playtest though as a monster opponent. That seems odd to me and at odds with all the secrecy.

If they did do a Dragonspawn race though, it would be super duper if you could choose "The Path of Might" (aka, Lizardman) or "The Path of Sorcery" (aka, Mojh).

So, er, I guess it's going to be Orcs. Crud.

Let's hope its something entirely new. I don't want Orcs.
