The Animatrix

Watched it last night. Hmmm.

On the whole, the whole 'viral' approach to the Matrix franchise is very interesting. The Animatrix weaves in and out of the movies, with individual stories taking place during or prior to them. The animation is amazing at points, with the incorporation of cgi techniques being at times subtle and at others overwhelming.

As a whole, it was pretty entertaining. The tale of the robots rise and humanity's fall was...well, disturbing. Several of the tales have what I would consider to be ambigous endings, but I'll have to rewatch some of them. Commentary tracks are including for several of the shorts, in the original japanese with subtitles (which, for the record, I liked...although I've only watched one of these so far).

Anime fans will recognize plenty of names, here, as well as animation groups like Studio Madhouse. The stories run a pretty wide gamut, and pose some interesting questions. The inclusion of several name actors from the movies, specifically Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, lend a good deal of legitimacy to the project, as does the writing by the Brothers Wachowski.

As to the 'viral' approach...I rather like it. 'The last flight of the Osiris', which is the story of how Thaddeus and his crew discover that the robots are drilling down to Zion is a starting point. That leads to the video game, which covers Niobe's quest to obtain and release that information, which interlocks with 'Reloaded', where that action is acted upon. 'Kid's Story' tells the tale of a character in the movie that considers Neo to be his personal hero. The video game also intertwines with the movie, supposedly, taking place at the same time as the movie. It certainly seems to have succeeded as a strategy, and I'll be curious where it goes from here.

I've watched them all on pirate DVD, which didn't have all the extras (so I'll be buying the real thing too, which eased my moral concious), and thought it was great.

The only two I didn't like were World Record and Matriculated, the rest were all thourougly enjoyable, especially 'Beyond', mainly because I prefer the brighter style of animation (as opposed to the darker sort of the Kid and Detective stories), and because it had all the cool things of the matrix (no Physics) without all the bad things (desolate real world, sentinels, etc.).

I've not seen the extras yet, as I said, so am looking forward to getting the real DVD very soon.

Matriculated was interesting, but didn't really fit the world of the Matrix, IMHO. It seemed padded in the middle, where it shouldn't have been, and too abrupt in the end. World Record was a little odd, in that it didn't make a lot of sense in the overall scheme of things, and the ambigious ending rankled.

Beyond was interesting, and a nice break from the darkness. I liked the style on 'Detective Story', actually. I liked the story of 'Kid's story' more than I did the animation, which was stylized but not really to my taste.

Personally, I think that the best episodes of the Animatrix are Final Flight of the Osiris, The Second Renaissance Parts 1 & 2, and Program. I also really enjoyed Kid's Story and Detective Story. I didn't care much at all for Beyond, Matriculated, and World Record.

All in all, I consider the Animatrix a good purchase, and it provides a lot of background to the Matrix saga.

By the way, has anybody discovered any easter eggs on the DVD yet?

All of the shorts were quite cool. I was more entertained than I thought I would be. The odd part is that The Animatrix entertained me more than The Matrix: Reloaded...

Oh yeah, Kid's Story. Great idea:

"Here kids! You hate your life, and you're thinking of committing suicide? Well go ahead, because if you do, you'll come out of the Matrix and everyone will love you! Throw your life away, and end the pain. It's fun!"

Stupid stupid stupid

Films have glorified doing violence to others for years. A film {or short} that glorifies doing violence to oneself is a step in the right direction... particularly for impressionable folks who treat movies like life-coaches...:)

Actually, I was more bothered by the fact that the kid was able to wake himself up, and escape the matrix on his own. Isn't that a really big deal? Given that, I'dve expected his part to be a little bigger in Reloaded.

Mind you, I've gotta agree with Mallus. If Kleibold and partner had just jumped off a roof, a lot of parents' would be much happier today.

For some reason, I wasn't that impressed with Animatrix. The animation was gorgeous, but overall I found it lacking in it's ability to hold my attention.

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to shred my geek card with that admission, but I'm willing to accept the consequences.

And I agree with WizarDru on the one story as well.

As an animator, I can say I was quite impressed with The Animatrix. It's always rather pissed me off that the US doesn't take animation as seriously as Japan, yet the budgets we have here are exponentially larger. So I enjoyed seeing the two blended into an overall great product. FFotO was pretty good, though I'd seen it in the theater, but I'm glad it was the only 3D film. TSR, 1+2 were both excellent, taking you first through sympathy with the robots to sympathizing (sort of) with humans again. *sigh* We really are arrogant.

I loved World Record, probably because I'm also real stoked on studies of anatomy. Made my muscles hurt. ;) Beyond was also great, because it gives a glimpse into what life among the unawakened masses in the Matrix are affected by it in other ways. What is it with The Matrix and cats?

While Matriculation made my head hurt, the way the robot was presented was incredible. I'm sticking its animators in with the voice actor and animators of Gollum. These people need to be recognized.
