The Arms Race of Races

Same here. I do that in M&M too for certain characters. The guy with Regeneration (Resurrection) dies every 4-5 sessions. He loves it.

You forgot that the DM is supposed to crush his PCs with the minimum amount of resource expenditure (=> total XP theoretically given to the PCs if they were somehow able to win a fight).

A real good DM can tell tales on how he caused a TPK on a 3rd level party just using a venerable Kobold, a rusty spoon and a tanglefoot bag.

Which implies a counter meta of the dm knowing that and then hitting the non-tief w/ uber-fire.

Just saying.

I really am not a fan of meta-gaming, nor building scenarios to specifically foil my PCs/their features/powers... unless the badguys have encountered the PCs or spied on them and have anti-goodguy things going.

Edit: Throws a fireball at hong. ...j/k.
Counter-Counter-Counter-metagaming... Eventually, this will lead to an infinity loop and the game will collapse into a singularity...

Huh?! I think that was the the average death rate for our entire Age of Worms party (ranging from 3-4 players +3 cohorts)...

The tiefling racial ability isn't too good on anything but a character that is hit often. In other words, a paladin or a fighter.

Tieflings gets a stat bonus to int and charisma, which is the primary stat for... well... the wizard and warlock? Both are secondary stats for a lot of classes, but you really want an 18 in your primary stat.

As far as I can tell allot of the Paladin's powers are CHA based. I think the Paladin has a problem with its powers being spread too thin over too many stats, though.

Agreed. However, tieflings are just not as good as the other races, even with the cool idea of standing in the nuke, still do not think they are anywhere as good as the other races. Still, nice to see someone liking them.

See ya,

I really hope this isn't a factor. Racial feats should be an option to add a little flavor, not deliberately overpowered relative to normal feats to balance out a subpar race.

But still having both sets of Racial feats is a nice advantage the Half-Elves have. It does allow for some very unique character development as time goes on. ie. Anything that gives more character options = good.

While my initial build is a striker, the 'Hit me with fire' tactic is even more efficient if the tiefling is a defender. Then you can use it every fight (except if everyone is fire resistant)!

Enemies naturally gather around the defender... Have a dragonborn and a wizard in your team and start the maniacal laughter. They'll be catcthing twice as many enemies in their AoE thanks to the tiefling than they would otherwise while the tiefling, as a fighter/paladin will be more tolerant to a few point of damage overflowing his resistance. A typical level 1 mage does 1D6+4 on a scorching burst which amounts to 1D6-1 (or 1d6-2 at level 2) for the tiefling on a failed save (for which he has +1 defense than the average race). Say you catch three or four enemies... 4D6+16 for your team, 1D6 -2 against. Hell yeah! If you time yourself with the leader, you can get your healing before the enemies even get to act again.

You know, between that tactic, the +2 to charisma and blood hunt / infernal wrath, I think they might be the best paladins!

I think the final analysis, tieflings won't be as good for as many races, because their racial abilities are less flexible. So it comes down to who really gets benefits from the +2 cha, +2 int.

Out of all the classes, the tiefling has the most synergy with a warlord (assuming you go with cha as your secondary stat). In that case, your getting a full +1 to 3 defenses, your boosting your primary and secondary stats, and your using attack rolls that will benefit a lot from your racial.
