  • Am a D&Der, playing a lot of C&C as well

    Votes: 14 3.7%
  • Am a D&Der, playing some C&C

    Votes: 26 7.0%
  • Am a D&Der, curious about C&C

    Votes: 91 24.3%
  • Am a D&Der, staying that way. No C&C.

    Votes: 153 40.9%
  • C&C? What's that?

    Votes: 34 9.1%

I plan on getting Castle Zagyg to run as a 1e module series rather than C&C. I like C&C but it just doesn't gel totally with me.

To all who are looking for an alternative to 3.5, and have tried C&C and it didn't work out, I'd strongly suggest before giving up on it, presenting your issues, frustrations, etc, to the C&C fanboys at the Troll Lord Games forums. The reason is that there could be some misunderstandings of how the game works that they would be more than happy to clear up. Or it could simply be you ran C&C correctly, understand the system, and just don't care for it. But before hanging up the C&C books, I'd look into it to make sure.

The reason I make this suggestion is that I didn't clearly understand how to run C&C and from coming from 3.5, I had a hard time mentally switching gears. But once I was able to break free from the 3.5 way of things, it's been heaven.

To me, 3e was a great system, but it went too far from the AD&D system. C&C changes things from the old ways of D&D (OD&D and AD&D both) only a little, but enough to smooth out some things for my personal preference. Now my games feel like the old ways which are a good thing for my enjoyment as a GM and for my players who now have more game time to roleplay since combat takes a LOT less time to accomplish the same results.

In fairness, that kind of thing should be in the rule book. If a game can't clearly relay to the consumer how it suposed to be played, then there's a huge problem.

I think that the core books explain how it is supposed to be played fairly well. But I think that most people usually skip that part and go directly to the rules. And then they aproach them with the D&D 3.x mentality.

Read the inicial pages of C&C and other pieces of advice in the last part of the book meant for the CK, and I think it is explained pretty well.

I think so, too but apparently people with access to the rule books aren't "getting it" which indicates a problem with the books, as the suggested solution has been to seek out this insight on forums (indicating that the books don't do the best job that they can do in this regard).

I don't really have any misunderstandings about how the game works. Also, I don't really think that presenting my criticisms to C&C evangelists is going to provide a solution for anyone involved. I'm perfectly happy to sell my C&C books and try out something new (or something new-again).

I've been running and GMing games for the past 25 years, and at the risk of invoking Hubris, I don't really think I'm lacking some essential skill that would somehow make the game enjoyable for me. C&C evangelists often point to some flaw in those who feel the game is broken, such as an inability to role-play or a reliance on heavy tactical rules.

I've avoided any specific criticisms of the game's writing and mechanics because I'm not any more interested in converting anyone away from a system than I am in converting them to a system. Anything I can say is sure to be taken the wrong way, and I don't really want to get into that.

I purchased 4 C&C PHBs in total. While no one in my local gaming community has expressed any interest in C&C, if I hear of any, I'll be sure the books end up in their hands.

I thought your problem was that you didn't like it (you got totally got a right not to like it), not that it was broken.

Why do you feel it's broken?
