The Faerie Woods [Knight Otu Judging]

Heading back to the enchanter's cottage, you find it changed substantially from how it was when you visited several days ago. It appears that someone has boarded up and barricaded the windows, claw marks are scratched into the door, and the flower beds have been trampled. Scorch marks dot the landscape in various places.

Nars draws his cold iron dagger and a flask of alchemist's fire. He tries to stealthily move around the cottage. Once making a complete circuit (if he sees no one hostile), he starts searching the area directly around the cabin for clues about what happened. (Take 20 on search.) He tries to look in any gaps in the windows using his dark vision.

Percy

Percy shakes her head. "It's funny, you know, the claw and burn marks should fill me with dread, but all I can think of is how happy I am that it's not that redcap who's been here."

She waits and watches, while Nars does his business, alert for danger or signs that the cabin is occupied.

When Nars looks more closely at the windows, he sees that the barricades obscure a great deal of broken glass. It looks like something was trying to break in recently, though the hastilly errected defences seem to have held.

Spellcraft DC 23: [sblock]The scorch marks appear to be from fireball spells.[/sblock]
Spot DC 18: [Sblock]Off to the east of the cottage, you notice the remains of a beast of some sort. On closer examination, you determine it to be a dead Worg.[/sblock]

(I don't see why you wouldn't be able to take 20 on a spot, though it is of course time consuming.)

Up on his tiptoes looking into the cottage Nars starts peering around, when a voice yells "Who's there!" Nars sees Trimble the enchanter (ooc: I don't think I gave him a name previously, but if I'm being inconsistent and you catch me let me know!) as the enchanter starts up from his chair. He has bags under his eyes, and you think he may have fallen asleep in the hard backed wooden chair.

Getting a better look at you, Trimble seems relieved.

"Thank the gods! I thought it was those (mild expletive deleted for the benefit or Eric's Grandmother) wolves coming back! Come inside, quickly!"

The door, strangely not barricaded like the windows, swings open quickly as Trimble ushers you inside.

Nars enters at Trimble's request. He allows Percy or Ishmael to explain the situation and inquire about the wolves. He examines the interior of the room to see if the wolves made it inside at any point in the struggle and see if anything other than the windows has been destroyed.

OOC: I'll assume that Trimble noticed Nars before he had the chance to make another spot roll.

(Trimble noticed Nars while Nars was taking 20 on his effort to see what was within the cottage. Taking 20 is roughly equivalent to rolling the numbers 1 through 20 in order. By the way, the spot check I had listed the DC for wasn't necessarilly through the window....)

Nars concludes that the wolf like creatures did not in fact make it inside the cottage.

"Yes! Big evil wolves! I threw pretty much all of my spells at them, and eventually they ran away, but they keep coming back. It's almost like they are waiting for me to go to sleep. I've been trying to stay awake to be ready for them, but I don't think I can fend off another attack."

Percy's face shows compassion for the man. "It must be tough living alone. Don't worry. We'll stay with you for awhile. We are experienced adventurers who have fought more than just wolves. Why don't you go get some rest. You can trust us, you know; we worked for Rilithorn as you recall."

"Let me just ask you a couple questions before you go down. Normal wolves wouldn't try to attack a dangerous man inside a cottage. Do you have enemies who might enchant these creatures? Or do you know anything else about them? Also, we have this sword..."

Percy produces the broken fey bane and smiles sweetly. "We would very much like to have this reforged. Perhaps you could do this for us if we can take care of your wolf problem?"
