Ivar's father, Pace, was a soldier until he lost a leg to a barbarian's axe. Retiring with his wife Anwyn to a small farm in the countryside of Axyr, Ivar was born a year later. While Anwyn was happy with her sedate new life, Pace still yearned for the excitement of the battlefield. Almost as soon as Ivar could walk, his father was training him to use a sword.
During his seventh year, his parents took Ivar to the market fair held in the nearby town. In one of the stalls an illusionist was performing minor magics to entertain the crowds, something that caught Ivar's attention. He spent the next few hours watching the man intently, and was silent on the cart ride home. As Pace was lighting a candle that night, Ivar made a small gesture and uttered a word, and suddenly the room was filled with light. The young boy's wooden sword was brightly illuminated with the glow of magic.
The next day, Ivar's parents presented him to the village's hedge wizard, asking if the boy would be suitable as an apprentice. While impressed by Ivar's feat at such a young age, the old man refused to apprentice the boy, recognising that Ivar possessed the sorcerer's innate skill rather than a wizard's learning.
This news only redoubled Pace's efforts to give the boy a firm grounding in the martial arts, recognising that such a talent needed the protection of a strong sword arm. Ivar proved an able pupil, and magic developed along more militant lines as his training progressed.
The family grew in size as Ivar's brother and three sisters came along over the years, putting pressure on the household. The farm started to prove too small for such numbers of children, and Ivar decided it was time to find his own way in the world. Bidding a fond farewell to his family, he joined the Axyrian army.
His tour of duty quickly took him to the north and the barbarian lands. All was going well, until Ivar almost suffered a blow to match his father's. His leg sorely hurt, and needing time to recover, Ivar has made his way back to the capital...
