You have to reconcile it with people who also want difference.

They're perfectly permitted to do that with their own characters. They don't have a right to demand it of others.

Reconcile the two different systems. Random and point buy can produce different characters (esp in trav). This is also kind of why I don't like point buy and random in the same system is that there is always something lost in translation it seems. I have never seen a system handle both well.

I have. But it had to be done from the ground up, and if you want them to be a good idea in the same campaign, you have to decide how much some characters being distinctly better than others is worth it to you. A game without a lot of break points can randomize within the same point range without breaking anything.
