Maybe not, though if it becomes repetitive ...

Even then, I'm not seeing avoiding that as something that should be demanded of someone. In one of my two groups, one player has in her old age settled into playing pretty much minor variations on a theme. You can just take it as a given. Its not my, or the GMs job, to insist she not do that as long as its compatible with the setting and the campaign setup.
 






Character creation? Yes, I'll sometimes sit down with a rule system and see what sort of interesting and playable character concepts I can come up with. No maximizing; just variety.
Seeing what's possible, seeing what the system at least seems to expect, seeing what slightly-strange combinations are possible and whether they're playable.
 

I have a little more respect for randomness baked into lifepath, but I'm still unsold that when I go into a game its a virtue to be dragged off into doing something I don't want to.
Of course. You shouldn't do what you don't want to do. Though Traveller is sort of built around it, so one is going to have modulate the power levels a bit.
