I'm in a f2f first edition A d&d group, the gygaxian version, and battle time is VERY engaging!
Exactly. The playstyle is more based on improvisation and interacting with the environment than picking a pre-selected item off a menu. Shenanigans, basically. So you as a player are forced to think and be more creative. Which is more engaging. The consequences are also more pronounced and long lasting, which pushes caution and planning, i.e. thinking. Which is more engaging. The rules are simpler, there are fewer of them, and they don’t try to cover everything. Again, forcing the participants to think and be more actively engaged.

If you believe the stereotype, the phrase "I love you" is supposed to be the hardest phrase for a man to ever say in our culture. But lately, the phrases "I was wrong" and "I don't know" seem like they have surpassed it.

Mister Manfellow, it's okay to be wrong. It's okay to not know something. Stop doubling-down while you still have some dignity---

--nevermind, that ship has sailed.

I almost want to read that thread!! Almost. My side still hurts from unrelenting laughter Saturday night. We got duped into crossing paths with a medusa.

Aaaaand....

For the second time in two weeks, my basement is flooded.

Every so often there's a benefit to being borderline antisocial - after a certain point, no matter how stressful the situation gets, I just stop caring and go into simple response mode. Which, in situations like this, is helpful, because otherwise I'd have words to say that Eric's Grandma could hear from here without needing to be online...

My neighborhood is on a hill, and the water comes down through my back yard, along the side of the house and out into the street I live on. Unfortunately, the path of the water brings it close enough to the side of my house that it comes into the submerged patio in back of my house. And once the water gets to the point where the drain pipe in the patio can't handle it, it eventually rises to the level where it comes over the step and through the French doors into the rec room.
And if putting a pump into the patio won't drain the water fast enough, I have to open the doors and let the water come through the rec room and out the garage.

Called out of work again, just like last time. Fortunately, even though I'm out of PTO and sick time for the year, having to take a point for calling out won't leave me anywhere close to getting written up, and my points and PTO/sick time reset at the beginning of the year...

I'm almost starting to wish we were getting snow instead - but I'm sure we probably will end up with a major snow storm (or three) later on this winter...

Feh.
